A high school teacher in Sydney’s northwest has been charged with child sex offences.

Plumpton High School music and drama teacher Tyson Moon was charged on November 14 with three counts of sexually touching a person over 16 and under 17 in special care.

The 26-year-old has been prohibited from teaching while the matter goes through the courts, after the allegations were reported to police on November 1.

In a letter to parents sent on Tuesday, principal Tim Lloyd said the NSW Department of Education had assigned Moon to a ‘non-school work location’.

‘With this matter before the courts, the school is unable to comment on anything that may be associated with it,’ he said.

‘As soon as this matter was brought to its attention, the school followed all related departmental policies and procedures, including support for students.

‘Counselling for your child is available from the school by contacting our main office.’

Moon has worked in Plumpton High School’s performing arts faculty since 2021.

In the school’s 2022 Gifted and Talented Program information booklet, Moon was called a ‘mentor’ to students interested in the theatre industry.

‘Mr Moon’s professional experience in the theatre industry has assisted in the mentoring and guidance of his students to assist in their own success in performing arts subjects whilst experiencing a glimpse of what the professional theatre industry is like throughout his drama lessons in the classroom,’ it said.

NSW Police confirmed Moon was granted conditional bail and will front court in Mount Druitt on December 16.
