Paul Hogan has given his brutal take on why Margot Robbie was snubbed in the Best Actress Oscar category.

Margot, 33, who was born and raised in Queensland, failed to make the cut at this year’s 96th annual Academy Awards, which will be held in Los Angeles on March 10.

The Crocodile Dundee star, 84, appeared on Sunrise on Friday in an interview conducted by his granddaughter, reporter Mylee Hogan.

‘To see them not nominated, that’s a sort of like… a dull tradition of: if it’s not about pain and suffering, it can’t be very good,’ he said.

‘It’s not fair.’

Hogan then praised the Barbie star, saying: ‘She’s great, not only is she beautiful and smart, she’s a nice kid, too.’

Robbie’s omission  prompted a wave of backlash after many expected her starring role in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie – currently the highest grossing film of all time – to be acknowledged by the Academy board.

Although many fans were upset Robbie wasn’t up for Best Actress, she did get a nomination for Best Picture as one of the film’s producers.

Gerwig, 40, who was ignored in the Best Director category, also scored a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar alongside her husband Noah Baumbach, 54.

Speaking at a Q&A hosted by the Academy Museum in Febraury, Robbie said Greta ‘should’ have been nominated for Director.

‘Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films,’ she said.

Robbie did not address her own Oscars snub but emphasised they were ‘beyond ecstatic’ the film had achieved eight Oscar nominations.

‘We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that, and some, like way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.

‘I’m so, so obviously ecstatic. Everyone getting the nods that they have is incredible and the Best Picture nod.’
