A passenger has died after falling ill on a flight from Bulgaria to Liverpool, with the emergency forcing the plane to make a diversion to Cologne.

Jet2 flight LS3214 left Burgas for the UK just after 1pm local time on September 16.

Around two hours into the flight, the crew declared an emergency due to a medical situation involving a man on board.

The pilots requested an immediate diversion, and the Boeing 737-800 landed in Germany after a rapid descent.

The man was reportedly suffering from a cardiac arrest, and despite the best efforts of passengers and crew on board, he tragically died.

The plane was parked in a remote area of Cologne airports, according to AirLive, and a medical team rushed to the scene.

The flight’s return to the UK was delayed until later that evening.

A spokesperson for Jet2 said: ‘We can confirm that flight LS3214 from Bourgas to Liverpool Johnn Lennon diverted to Cologne on Monday 16th September, due to a customer requiring medical assistance.

‘Regrettably, we can confirm that the customer sadly passed away.

‘We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the customer’s family and friends at this very difficult time.’
