Oprah Winfrey discussed the importance of connecting with the studio audience in a sneak peek for Tuesday morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
The 69-year-old OWN CEO famously hosted her own self-titled daytime syndicated talk show for 25 seasons spanning 1986-2011, which remains the highest rated in American television history.
The 48-year-old former child star gripped Oprah’s hand as she said: ‘Something that I learned about you, because I didn’t know this detail was that you would spend time with the audience outside of the show you were filming.
‘And one thing that I’ve done is spend time with the audience every day. And I had felt guilty for it.’
Winfrey replied that she talked to her audience members at length ‘every day’ and said ‘it was necessary.’

‘My crew used to be like, “Oh my god, how much time is she going to spend talking to that audience?! Would she please let the audience go so we can let the next audience in?!”‘ the self-made mogul recalled.
‘But that’s why this is so hard to do without an audience. And I was complimenting you on the fact that you got through [the coronavirus pandemic] without an audience because it’s almost impossible.’
Oprah continued: ‘You’re not getting their energy. It’s their energy. It’s their feedback. It’s understanding whether whatever you’re saying is connecting. Look at the lady in red. See? She’s nodding. She’s like the amen choir. So to do it without anybody? Applause to you.’
One topic of discussion that will undoubtedly come up on Tuesday’s episode is the man they share in common – three-time Oscar winner Steven Spielberg – who gave them both their big break in show business back in the 1980s.
Drew was only six years old in 1981 when she landed the part of mischievous child of divorce Gertie Taylor in the 76-year-old filmmaker’s iconic cinematic classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which amassed $792.9M at the box office.
And Winfrey was the 31-year-old host of WLS-TV’s AM Chicago when she scored her film debut as combative Sofia in Steven’s 1985 big-screen adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel The Color Purple, for which she received an Oscar nomination.
The Mississippi-born billionaire and Spielberg reunited to serve as producers on Blitz Bazawule’s big-screen adaptation of the 2005 Broadway musical The Color Purple, which hits US theaters December 25 and UK theaters January 26.
Oprah will next play a mystery role in Tyler Perry’s Netflix film Six Triple Eight about the all-black, all-female 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion sorting over 17M pieces of mail ahead of time.
