Thunderstorms and cloudy skies are threatening to spoil New Year’s Eve celebrations following more than a week of wild weather on ‘s east coast.
Millions of revellers from around the world are set to descend on Sydney Harbour to watch the annual fireworks extravaganza that lights up the Harbour Bridge to welcome the new year.
But both Sydney and Melbourne will see a mostly cloudy day on Sunday, with the Harbour City expecting an early shower and light winds.
The wet weather is expected to hold off for the evening however, hopefully allowing visitors to make the most of the celebrations from various vantage points across the city.

Brisbane in contrast is expected to welcome the new year with showers kicking off in the afternoon and lasting into the evening.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting up to 10mm of rain to be dumped across the city, ruining plans partygoers plans.
The Top End is also forecast to see a soggy day that could dampen festivities with Darwin set to receive showers and thunderstorms.
Canberra will be cloudy with light winds throughout the day.
In Western and central parts of it will be mostly sunny with tops of 30C.

Meteorologist Sarah Scully said the east coast will see showers and storms over the next two days with rain set to pass briefly over NSW Friday before heavier falls on Saturday.
‘We see a return of those widespread showers and possible severe thunderstorms across eastern parts of Queensland and also NSW as well.’
