Nancy Pelosi praised Joe Biden profusely in her remarks to the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, thanking him for his service.
The words were notable from the former speaker after she played a large role in convincing Biden to exit the presidential race.
‘He established one of the most successful presidencies of modern times,’ she said. ‘Thank you Joe.’
But her warm words for the president may be too late.
The Bidens – particularly Jill Biden – are known to hold a grudge.
And they are known to still be angry at Nancy Pelosi.
On the tarmac after his convention speech on Monday, as he prepared to fly to California, DailyMail.com asked Biden if he was still angry at Pelosi and if he had spoken with her.
He didn’t acknowledge the anger portion of the question, but noted he hadn’t talked to her yet.
‘No, I haven’t spoken to her. No one made my decision but me. No one knew it was coming,’ he said.
But Pelosi was a driving force behind his departure from the presidential race.
On Saturday, the day before he announced his departure from the race, Pelosi sent an urgent message to the president: She was prepared to go public with her concerns that he could not defeat Donald Trump in November.
The ultimatum was clear: Drop out now – or Pelosi would trash her political ally, and friend of over 50 years, on the global stage.
Biden announced his exit the next day.
Anita Dunn, the president’s former communications director who left the administration a few weeks ago, hinted the Bidens’ don’t forget in remarks at her goodbye party at the White House.
‘Revenge is a dish best served cold,’ Dunn said in words seen directed to the former speaker.
Both long-time creatures of the Washington scene, Biden, 81, and Pelosi, 84, have known each other since the 1970s.
When Biden served as Vice President, Pelosi became House Speaker, and they worked in tandem to pass landmark Obamacare legislation.
Pelosi stepped down from House leadership last year but has in no way lost power or influence.
Delegates have acknowledged her influence by wearing pins with her image labelled ‘the Godmother’ as they walk around the convention site.
And actress Mindy Kaling, who is MCing the evening, introduced Pelosi as ‘mother of dragons,’ referring to the powerful Queen on the TV show Game of Thrones.
The television cameras were on Pelosi the night Joe Biden addressed the convention. She sat in the front row of the California delegation. That state had the front spot in the convention hall. Harris is from there and the nominee’s state usually gets the prime position.
Pelosi waved her ‘We heart Joe’ sign but the awkwardness was visible.
Biden left Chicago after his speech, going to California where he is spending the week in isolation with his family.
As for Pelosi, after her praise of Biden, she pivoted to touting Kamala Harris, calling her a ‘leader of strength and wisdom.’
‘I have known Kamala Harris for decades. Personally, I know her a person of deep faith. Which is reflected in her community care and service. Officially, she is a leader of strength and wisdom and eloquence on policy. Most recently, demonstrated fighting for a woman’s right to choose. Politically, she is a astute and strategic in winning difficult elections, quickly securing the nomination with dignity,’ she said.
Pelosi also praised Tim Walz, whom she served in the House with.
‘I had the honor of serving with Tim for 12 years in the Congress. He united Democrats, Republicans, and independents to turn a red district blue,’ she said.
She then switched tracks yet again to talk about the attack on the Capitol on January 6th and to slam Donald Trump.
Let’s not forget who assaulted democracy on January 6. He did. But let’s not forget who saved democracy that day. We did.
She concluded her short remarks to the election ahead: ‘Onward to victory.’
