A British husband and wife have been found dead on a beach on the Caribbean island of Grenada, according to local media.

The couple had been on holiday on the paradise island of Carriacou, and circumstances surrounding the deaths remain a mystery.

Their bodies were found on the popular Paradise Beach in the village of L’Esterre on Saturday.

The man, aged 76, died at the scene, while his wife, 77, was reportedly taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, where she was examined and pronounced dead.

Police have launched an investigation into the unexplained deaths and are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

In a statement, reported by Loop News, police said that the postmortem will seek to ‘tell us exactly what happened to them but for now, it’s an apparent drowning’.

Separate unconfirmed reports have suggested that the man got into difficulty and that his wife died as she tried to help him.

It comes after the deaths of two American tourists in the Grenadines last month during an apparent yacht hijacking.

The bodies of US couple Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel have not been found, but police have classed their deaths as homicides.

The deaths have sent shockwaves across the island, which has a population of just over 6,000.

It is the second biggest island in Grenada and is roughly 12 miles long by 3 miles wide.

The FCDO has been contacted for comment.
