At least two students have been stabbed at Van Nuys High School in Los Angeles after a fight broke out, according to officials.

A suspect is on the run and the school remains on lockdown.

Police responded to the stabbing attack at about 11am on Wednesday.

A 16-year old boy is in critical condition after being stabbed, according to police.

A 15-year-old was also stabbed and taken to the hospital. He is listed in moderate condition.

A third student, another 16-year-old boy, was not stabbed but evaluated at the scene.

Images from the scene showed one student being taken out in a stretcher.

At least one juvenile was arrested at the scene, a police source told the Los Angeles Times.

However, one suspect remains at large. Police are yet to release a description of the suspect.

The stabbing happened after a brawl between as many as 11 students broke out in the campus quad area.

There has been a recent surge of gang activity in the San Fernando Valley which has spilled into several public schools including Van Nuys High, per the LA Times.

LAPD has asked that anyone with information on the stabbing contact police.

The Los Angeles Unified school district said the high school will remain on lockdown until police give the all-clear.

‘Students are safe, and LASPD will stay on scene and continue to provide safety and support to students and employees. Parents of students have been notified,’ the LAUSD said in a statement.

As of 1pm PST, students remained on lockdown and lunch would be brought to them, officials said. The school might also release students on a staggered dismissal.

‘This is one of those moments where you hold your breath and hope the initial information is not as bad as what actually occurred,’ Los Angeles School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said.

He added: ‘One incident like this one is one incident too many.’
