Joy Reid sparked backlash with another hot take on TikTok as she claimed Arizona Senator Mark Kelly would have been a better VP pick for Kamala Harris because he is as white as ‘a mayonnaise sandwich on wonder bread.’
The MSNBC host, 55, admitted that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was ‘not the pick I expected’, and ‘thought (Harris) would go astronaut.’
Reid was branded a ‘racist’ by online critics for her remarks, with one questioning: ‘Could you imagine if this was reversed?’
It is only the latest in a string of eyebrow-raising clips Reid has sent from her TikTok account in recent weeks, including one that claimed black Americans would have to be ‘real crazy’ and ‘weird’ not to vote for Harris in November.
MSNBC host Joy Reid, 55, sparked backlash after she weighed in on Kamala Harris’ VP race, where she branded one of the candidates as white as ‘a mayonnaise sandwich on wonder bread’
Reid said she was surprised by Harris’ pick, and admitted she thought Arizona Senator Mark Kelly (pictured), a former NASA astronaut and Navy fighter pilot, would get the nod
In the clip filmed from her couch, Reid began weighing in on the VP race by saying she was going to ‘keep it real.’
‘This is not the pick I expected that she would make,’ she said.
Reid noted that it was widely reported the veepstakes came down to three final candidates, with Walz and Kelly also pitted against Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
‘I thought she would go astronaut, keeping it real,’ Reid continued. ‘(Kelly) to me would have been the safest, most conventionally safe pick… white, super white.
‘Like a mayonnaise sandwich on wonder bread white.’
Reid added that because the Arizona senator was from a border state, he ‘could have made a strong argument for her,’ particularly as the border is seen as one of Harris’ main weaknesses compared to Donald Trump.
Viewers reacted with fury at Reid’s remarks, with many taking offence to her focus on the color of the VP candidate’s skin.
‘Joy is the ultimate race baiter,’ said one critic.
Another called out her employer, saying: ‘(Reid) is so thoroughly disgusting! How can MSNBC justify having such a racist on their network?’

Critics slammed Reid’s remarks on social media, questioning: ‘Could you imagine if this was reversed?’
Reid’s inflammatory TikTok is not the first time she has brought on backlash from conservative critics.
Last month, the MSNBC host made a string of statements about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, including implying that he was not even shot at all.
Amid mounting pressure on the Secret Service to explain the disastrous security slip that allowed a gunman to fire at Trump, she listed several things she found ‘weird’ about the episode.
She appeared to imply it was a staged event that allowed Trump to ‘pose’ for the iconic photo of him pumping his fist in the air.
‘We don’t know why, for nine full seconds, Donald Trump was allowed to stand back up during an active shooting,’ Reid said.
‘Even though they at that point had said the shooter was down, how would they have known if there were more shooters or not? There could have been five shooters for all they knew.
‘Yet, they allowed him to stand up in the middle of that crisis, and pose for a photo, and fist pump the air, so he could get the iconic photo.’

Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk led the criticisms of Reid’s remarks last month, as he called on MSNBC to ‘take Reid off the air’ for her ‘outrageous, insane, defamatory’ theories
Reid also stated that we ‘still don’t know for sure whether Donald Trump was hit by a bullet,’ citing early reports that he may have been hit by a shard of glass from a teleprompter.
Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk led the criticisms of Reid’s remarks, as he called on MSNBC to ‘take Reid off the air’ for her ‘outrageous, insane, defamatory’ theories.
‘Donald Trump should sue her, immediately,’ he added.
Days later, Reid again raised eyebrows in a broadcast from the Republican National Convention, where she compared Trump’s assassination attempt to President Biden testing positive for Covid.
She equated Biden recovering from the virus in ‘a couple of days’ to Trump standing up and pumping his fist seconds after being shot, feeling they ‘convey the exactly the same thing.’
Reid’s remarks on the shootings sparked fury in conservative circles, with CPAC host Mercedes Schlapp branding her ‘out of control.’
‘Her comments are irresponsible and dangerous,’ she said on X. ‘She is the ultimate conspiracy theorist.’
‘Joy Reid should be fired,’ concluded another critic. ‘MSNBC, you can never be taken seriously with this woman on the air.’
