The moustache has grown in popularity with Gen Zers sparking a boom in facial hair inspired by Hulk Hogan and Freddie Mercury, according to a new poll.

A study found that one in three men (34%) aged between 16 and 24 have decided to don a tash this Movember, with 18% of them admitting they wanted to replicate the look of their favourite 1980s icons.

Freddie Mercury’s distinguished mo is most popular style among the younger generation, with 20% of lads voting it as the most iconic.

Sonic the Hedgehog’s arch nemesis Doctor Eggman was close behind (12%) along with WWE wrestler Hulk Hogan (9%) and the late pop icon Prince (8%).

The poll from SEGA games also found that around 27% of gents believe their facial hair adds a few years to their appearance and makes them seem more mature.

The poll comes as SEGA announced that Dr Eggman’s will shave his famous tash for the first time in over 30 years to mark the start of Movember.

The fundraising event encourages chaps to grow a moustache over the course of the month to raise money for men’s mental health projects.

SEGA’s Daniel Lazarides said: ‘We have long admired all the important work that Movember does to support men’s health, and we’re thrilled to help raise awareness for an incredible cause by removing one of the most renowned moustaches in popular culture history.’
