This the moment police pursued a motorbike thief through the streets of south London before tactically colliding with the stolen vehicle.

Officers tracked the rider using a helicopter as it cruised through residential districts at 80mph, before tactically crashing into him with a patrol car.

Aerial footage of the incident shows the motorcyclist having to slam his brakes on in order to narrowly avoid hitting a pedestrian as it sped along both sides of the road.

The vehicle is also seen to almost collide with a white van while segueing through the traffic.

He is then shown driving contraflow in order to overtake a Waitrose delivery lorry and speeding through a set of red traffic lights.

A police operator is heard on the collated video alerting teams to the north of the river as the motorbike was heading in the direction of Chiswick Bridge. The reckless motorcyclist was said to pose a ‘temporarily high risk’ to the public.

Officers are shown using an unmarked blue BMW to make ‘tactical contact’ with the motorbike, knocking the vehicle onto the pavement and sending the rider flying.

After his vehicle is rammed, the man attempts to run off down the street before he is cornered by police.

The suspected thief was spotted throwing an item onto the road as he tried to flee the scene.

He is then shown in the clip lying on the floor as he was detained by three officers.

The ‘high-powered’ motorbike was found to have no licence plates, Metropolitan Police confirmed.

The force wrote on Facebook: ‘Stealing a bike is one thing… trying to outrun a Police helicopter is another.

‘A Police Helicopter tracked it [the motorbike] from above, and police officers used tactical contact to bring it to a stop.

‘The suspect tried to escape but with our eyes in the sky and dog units on the ground, there was nowhere to hide.’

The incident is the latest of several police chases involving stolen motorbikes.

A thief received ‘instant karma’ racing through Pelton, County Durham on a Kawasaki 300 motorbike.

After careering into Chester-le-Street town centre, the rider narrowly missed a bus before losing control and was flung off the bike while travelling at around 40mph.

A young mother with a pushchair was shown narrowly leaping out of the way, yanking her children back as Parker and the wrecked bike skid towards them.

Ciaran Parker pleaded guilty at Durham Crown Court to a string of offences, including aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and drug driving.

The thief was detained for 14 months in a Young Offender Institution.

On another occasion, video footage caught the moment a motorbike thief was sent flying after smashing into a car.

White smoke was shown billowing from bike after it crashed into a light blue car on Southfield Road in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
