This is the moment a young woman led police on a 70mph chase through residential street in a car with cloned number plates after she had just been banned from driving.

Caitlyn Thomas, from Fairwater, Cardiff, has been jailed for 10 months after she sped through 30mph zones in her Audi on November 8 in Welsh capital.

The 23-year-old driver was using cloned plates to try and hoodwink officers as she had just been disqualified from driving and had no insurance.

After spotting a marked police car, Thomas sped off and drove into oncoming traffic risking a head-on smash.

The driver also jumped red lights during the high speed pursuit before being nabbed when she lost control of her car.

The scary chase was recorded on a police patrol car’s dash cam in one minute and 32 second footage in the Gabalfa area of Cardiff, south Wales.

Thomas was jailed for 10 months after admitting dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance.

She was also banned from getting behind the wheel for three years and slapped with a £185 fine.

A South Wales Police spokesperson said: ‘Caitlyn Thomas, 23, from Fairwater was driving her Audi in Gabalfa using cloned plates to disguise her recent disqualification.

‘Thomas then reacted to the sight of a marked police car and a high speed pursuit ensued around the suburban areas of north Cardiff.

‘Caitlyn Thomas was charged and remanded the next day, and she pleaded guilty to driving whilst disqualified, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and driving without insurance.

‘On 8 November at Cardiff crown court, she was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment, a three-year disqualification and a £185 fine.’

Sgt Mike Williams said: ‘As evident in this shocking dash cam footage, Thomas’ driving was incredibly dangerous, driving into oncoming traffic, failing to stop at red lights, and driving at nearly 70mph on residential streets.

‘She eventually lost control of the car on Heathwood Road, Llanishen and was detained by officers.

‘It is a miracle that no one was injured as a result of her actions.’

Local Robert Wilson said: ‘When she comes out can someone let her know F1 are looking for potential female racing drivers.’

Pat John added: ‘What an idiot. Deserved to be caught.’
