One person has been arrested following a violent confrontation between NYPD officers and migrants at the city’s Randall’s Island center.
Chaos broke out on the increasingly lawless tent camp on Thursday when an individual not registered to stay at the facility was asked to leave by officials, police said.
Video circulated on social media shows police apprehending one individual before several others joined the fray. No serious injuries occurred, police later said.

It is the latest in a series of violent assaults since Randall’s Island began housing migrants in August 2023 as New York struggled to house large numbers arriving from other states.
Just last month a 24-year-old man was stabbed to death on the island while waiting in line for food.
Witnesses told police Dafren Cabello, 24, was attacked by four men after reportedly chatting to a Peruvian man’s girlfriend.
Migrants residing at the facility have said that they have regular concerns about their safety at the shelter with Mauricio Pinto telling the New York Post: ‘Everyone has a knife.’
Randall’s Island migrant shelter is fully funded by the state of New York. It spans across 6.4acres of land and houses nearly 3,000 adult male migrants.
