The Met Gala is arguably fashion’s biggest night of the year – but several celebrities stepping out on the red carpet this evening at the prestigious event proved that it is also a prime example of when a desperate desire to make a style mark can go horribly wrong.
For while many guests at this year’s gala wowed and awed with their fashion looks, several suffered such disastrous style fails that they left the red carpet looking more like a Halloween parade.
The dress code for this year’s event is The Garden of Time, which pairs with the new exhibition that it is being held to honor: Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, a somewhat ironic title given that several of the attendees looked much like they had just rolled out of bed and straight onto the red carpet.
Crazed hairstyles, see-through dresses, and bizarre attempts at haute couture costumes had all been paraded in front of the cameras within just minutes of the event kicking off.
Amelia Gray Hamlin made a baffling appearance at the 2024 Met Gala in what appeared to be a blow-up dress that was filled with flowers
The 22-year-old model’s bizarre beauty look simply add to her bewildering overall appearance
Lana Del Rey also landed on a spot on the list of worst-dressed stars in a bizarre tree-inspired dress that featured a giant mosquito net covering her face
The 38-year-old singer added what appeared to be metal clogs on her feet, which added another bizarre element to the look
Dua Lipa also chose an incredibly strange outfit for such a high-end occasion, donning what looked very much like a beach cover up on her bottom half, while her corset-style top looked like a leftover costume from Moulin Rouge
The back of the outfit was even more revealing, while the addiction of an enormous feather tale made the look that much more bewildering
Cara Delevingne was another British guest who put on a somewhat baffling display on the red carpet, donning a strange glittering shirt that saw her entire head covered in crystals
She paired the bizarre beaded number with a simple white skirt – allowing her strange head piece to truly shine
FKA Twigs is known for pushing the fashion boundaries but she took things to a whole new level on Monday night in her wildly revealing beaded ensemble that featured a very odd-looking knitted cape
Model Amelia Gray Hamlin caused quite the stir when she arrived on the red carpet, wearing what appeared to be a blow-up yellow mini dress that was filled with pink flowers.
The strapless design featured a strapless neckline and a tight-fitting bodice made of clear plastic wrapped in a yellow tulle fabric, before extending down into an enormously wide skirt that resembled a balloon.
Her skirt was then stuffed with fake pink roses, before being wrapped with another thin layer of the yellow tulle; the overall effect resembled more of a party pinata than a red carpet ensemble – an image that was not helped by her over-the-top beauty look.
Contrasting the vibrant yellow of the dress, Amelia’s dark hair was slicked into a wet-look style that hung down around her shoulders in limp, lank sections, having been styled under her necklace in another bizarre twist.
Meanwhile her makeup was incredibly severe, featuring a very dramatic, straight brow, and a clashing deep fuchsia lipstick that added to the overall ‘gothic’ style.
On the other end of the spectrum was singer Lana Del Rey, who could well have been attending a woodland-themed costume party rather than a star-studded gala.
Doja Cat made the very confusing decision to turn up to the Met Gala in a long white T-shirt that was soaking wet and completely see-through – leaving her forced to cover her chest with her arm
Ironically, the transparent T-shirt was actually a step up from the towel she wore to leave her hotel, with the design (seen left) even featuring its own faux IKEA-style label, with the singer also sporting a Crown Affair towel on her head
Singer Kelsea Ballerini took the floral theme a little too far with her embellished dress, which looked as though it had been left under a blossom tree for a few hours before she turned up on the red carpet
Speaking of awful embellishments, Natasha Poonawalla’s white gown looked as though it had been dragged through an attic and covered in cobwebs – a perfect answer to a Halloween party, perhaps, but a far cry from an appropriate Met Gala look
Emma Chamberlain, 22, suffered a very rare fashion fail at the event, where she was one of the earliest arrivals on the carpet
The online star donned a drab brown lace gown that left her looking like a tree trunk cut down in its prime – a far cry from the stylish star that many know her as

Dressed in what can only be described as a tree-inspired ensemble, the chart-topper was wearing a floor length beige strapless dress that featured glittering thorny stems stretching up its entire length, before ending far above her head.
Adding another funky twist was the enormous mosquito net that had then been hung over the stems, making it look as though Lana was about to charge into the rainforest for a week-long camping trip.
Lace was a very risky choice for many stars on the red carpet at this year’s Met Gala, with several celebrities who opted for the saucy fabric ending up with disastrous results.
Dua Lipa was one such star, having gone all out – and then some – with her revealing black lace ‘gown’, which was more a beach cover-up than it was a black tie dress.
The skirt portion of the outfit was an incredibly see through piece of fabric that had been knotted around her waist, leaving barely anything to the imagination, particularly when she turned her back to the cameras.
Then there was the lace covered corset-style top, which looked much like a vintage piece from Victoria’s Secret, and was made all the more eye-popping by the addition of a long feather boa that she draped over one shoulder and allowed to flow down behind her like a long tail.
Host Anna Wintour’s daughter Bee Carrozzini also missed the mark in her own lace number, which had an incredibly strange pattern and featured several different cut-outs that left it looking a bit like it had been pieced together at the last minute
Game of Thrones icon Gwendoline Christie was giving more ‘maniacal magician’ than haute couture style star thanks to her bizarre cape and bafflingly voluminous hairstyle
Her pale makeup and bizarre poses did little to help with her overall look at the event
La La Anthony also landed herself a spot on the worst-dressed list thanks to her very tacky-looking corset gown, which featured a lace panel that ran up her neck and into sleeves
The rest of the design flowed into a large rose-shaped mermaid-style hem at the floor, which left her looking akin to a Disney villain – an image that was not helped by the addition of a crystal-covered rose-shaped handbag that she carried with her
Broadway star J. Harrison Ghee chose to take the garden theme a little too literally by dressing up as a giant bug
Influencer and YouTube star Emma Chamberlain, 22, was one early arrival who suffered a very rare fashion fail, donning a drab brown lace gown that left her looking like a tree trunk cut down in its prime – a far cry from the stylish star that many know her as.
Host Anna Wintour’s daughter Bee Carrozzini also missed the mark in her own lace number, which had an incredibly strange black-and-white pattern that looked more like an optical illusion than the design for a high-end piece of couture.
It also featured several different cut-outs and string embellishments that left it looking a bit like it had been pieced together at the last minute, rather than having been carefully planned for many weeks in advance.
Lace proved to be a tricky fabric for many at this evening’s event, with La La Anthony also landing herself a spot on the worst-dressed list thanks to her very tacky-looking corset gown, which featured a lace panel that ran up her neck and into sleeves, while the rest of the design flowed down into a large rose-shaped mermaid-style hem at the floor.
However there were many who steered clear of lace but were still unable to avoid a major style slip-up.
Actress and influencer Jessica Serfaty caught the eye for all the wrong reasons in her flower-embellished gown, which was horrifying enough to look at, before she then removed the outer layer to show off her tacky silver bra underneath
Once inside, Serfaty shed the floral layer altogether to show off a barely-there dress that made her look as though she was about to hit a beach club in St. Tropez
Jordan Roth’s attempt at flower power also fell woefully flat
Thai fashion star Nichapat Suphap certainly drew attention with her incredibly revealing look, but the tacky design would have been better suited to a trashy beauty pageant than an event of such esteem
Outspoken author Jill Kargman revealed on Instagram that she had taken inspiration from a Tim Burton movie for her outfit, and the baffling lace number certainly left her looking like a character from Corpse Bride
Not only was the color combination on Sarah Pidgeon’s dress a bit of an eyesore, the design itself featured an incredibly unflattering under skirt that flared out at the mid-thigh, creating a very unflattering silhouette
Actress and influencer Jessica Serfaty caught the eye for all the wrong reasons in her flower-embellished gown, which looked as though it had been DIY-ed by a high school home economics glass, courtesy of the bizarre 3-D flowers that were stuck all over it, covering her in an array of clashing colors and textures.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, she then removed the garish outer layer to reveal a sheer neon pink under layer than left her incredibly skimpy silver bra on full display – a far cry from the refined elegance that the Met Gala is meant to represent.
And then there were those who certainly put the ‘costume’ in Costume Institute, opting for outfits that would have been very comfortable on the aisles of a party store, but stuck out for all the wrong reasons on the Met Gala red carpet.
Broadway star J. Harrison Ghee was one such guest, choosing to take the ‘garden’ theme a little too literally by dressing up as what appeared to be a giant bug, donning a large gold headdress that was shaped like antennae.
The rest of the outfit was no better.
Ghee’s gown featured enormous pink and blue feather embellishments that could well have found themselves on the outfit of a Vegas showgirl, while the glittery blue fabric did little to take away from the tacky appearance of the overall look.
