The original Mean Girls film proved to be a surprise hit at the box office, earning $86 million domestic and $128.9 million worldwide, from just a $17 million budget.
It has gone on to achieve cult status and consistently ranks as one of pop culture’s ultimate teen films.
The flick was loosely based on Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 non-fiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes and writer-star Tina’s own high school experiences.

Its reboot, which was released in January, was admitted to have been downplayed as a musical by filmmakers Paramount after several cinemagoers confessed they had no clue until they saw the film.
They did so after a number of fans revealed that they were unaware of any musical numbers, with some even walking out of showings when the singing began.
Explaining the decision behind their marketing, Paramount’s president of global marketing and distribution Marc Weinstock told Variety: ‘We didn’t want to run out and say it’s a musical because people tend to treat musicals differently.
‘To start off saying musical, musical, musical, you have the potential to turn off audiences,’ he said. ‘I want everybody to be equally excited.’
