A manhunt has been launched for a van driver who fled the scene after a three-year-old girl was killed in a tram crash tragedy in Manchester.
The fatal collision took place just before 10am on Mosley Street in Manchester city centre and involved a Metrolink tram and a white Mercedes-Benz van.
The van collided with the tram, which then forced the van onto the pavement where it hit the three-year-old.
The child was was quickly taken to hospital but sadly passed away from her injuries shortly after.
Police are now hunting the van driver who fled the scene at Mosley Street.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have seen the driver leave his vehicle.
Assistant Chief Constable Stephanie Parker said their investigation is ongoing and they are investigating ‘a number of lines of enquiry’.
She added: ‘I would like to send my condolences to the family of the victim. This is a tragic incident where a young girl has sadly lost her life despite the responding officer’s best attempts to save her.’
No arrests have yet been made and a scene remains in place around the Mosley Street, Booth Street and Nicholas Street areas whilst officers conduct their investigation.
Roads are currently closed around St Peter’s Square and police have warned a ‘lengthy closure’ is in place.
A statement from Transport for Greater Manchester read: ‘All of our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. We are supporting police with their investigation.’
A GMP Traffic spokesperson wrote on X: ‘Our officers are currently in attendance at a collision, involving a tram and another vehicle in Manchester city centre.
‘We are presently trying to establish the circumstances however we envisage there will be a lengthy closure of surrounding streets near to St Peters Square.’
A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the little girl who sadly passed away following an incident in Manchester city centre today.
‘We attended the scene at Mosley Street this morning at 9.58am, responding with two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, two air ambulance crews and several senior clinicians.’
