A man has been shot dead in suburbia before the suspected getaway car was found burnt out 4km away.

Emergency responders were called to Sutherland Street, Canley Heights in Sydney’s west at about 7pm on Sunday night following reports shots had been fired.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene but he was unable to be revived.

A car was found well alight in the nearby suburb of Wakeley a short time later.

The suspected gunman remains on the run.

Police have commenced investigations after a man was fatally shot in Sydney’s west today.

About 6.50pm (Sunday 29 December 2024), emergency services were called to Sutherland Street, Canley Heights, following reports of shots fired.

A man – believed to be aged in his 30’s – was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for gunshot wounds; however, he died at the scene.

Police have received no other reports of injury.

Officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene, which will be forensically examined.

A short time later, emergency services were called to an abandoned car on fire on Bathurst Street, Wakeley.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews extinguished the blaze a short time later.

Investigations into the incidents – which are believed to be linked – are underway by officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command, assisted by State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
