An man in his 20s has been shot by armed police in a quiet street in leafy Surrey early this morning.

Police were called to  Nursery Road, Knaphill in Woking around 12.36am following an altercation between two people. One man was armed with a weapon in the street.

A man in his 20s was shot by armed officers at the scene and taken to hospital in critical, but stable, condition. His next of kin have been notified.

Surrey Police say that both individuals involved in the incident were known to each other. Officers believe there is no wider threat to the public. 

A weapon was recovered from the scene and Nursery Road remains partially closed with limited foot and vehicle access to residents. Others are asked to avoid the area.

The force has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Surrey Police says it will be ‘supporting their investigation’.

Surrey Police said today: ‘We have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and will be supporting their investigation. We will not be able to comment further on the independent investigation into this incident.

‘Nursery Road is partially closed with limited foot and vehicle access to residents. Please avoid the area where possible for the time being. We appreciate the localised disruption this will cause and would like to thank the community for their cooperation and patience while our enquiries are underway.’

Police have launched an appeal for anyone with information or video footage that could be useful to their investigation to contact the force quoting PR/45240091308.
