A man has been killed in a suspected hit and run on a quiet street in Sydney’s east.

Emergency services were called to Fletcher Street in Tamarama just after 4am on Sunday after a man, 28, was found critically injured on the road by a passer-by.

Police and paramedics performed CPR but were unable to revive the man and he died at the scene.

It is understood he suffered injuries to his head and upper body.

Crash unit investigators were called to the scene to help detectives as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Police are also calling for witnesses or anyone with CCTV footage that may able to assist to come forward.

The young man, who is believed to be from the local area, is described as slim-built and Caucasian with brown hair. He was wearing a blue button-up shirt and tan shorts at the time of his death.

Detective Assistant Superintendent Adam Solah said officers had contacted the man’s family.

‘The family are obviously very upset and distraught, and our hearts go out to them, having to find out such difficult news,’ he said.

Superintendent Solah said police had gathered extensive footage from the scene but could not confirm at this stage whether the man was killed in a hit and run.

He said that possibility was one theory that is ‘forming part of our lines of inquiry’, but police are continuing to look at ‘all avenues’.

Superintendent Solah urged anyone who may have seen the man, was in the area during the early morning and has dash cam footage, or was in anyway involved in the incident to contact police.

Police spent Sunday morning processing the crime scene on Fletcher Street, between Glen and Silver Streets, with a blue tent erected in the middle of the road.

Detectives were seen door knocking houses in the neighbourhood and speaking to locals, with investigators probing whether heavy rain overnight was a factor in the incident.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the website.
