A multi-vehicle crash west of Sydney has sparked commuter chaos during morning peak hour.
Emergency services were called to Richmond Road in Berkshire Park, a suburb near Penrith about 55km west of Sydney’s CBD, just before 6am on Tuesday.
Police were told a sedan and hatchback collided head-on before an SUV smashed into the back of the hatchback, leaving a woman trapped due to the car being crushed.
Paramedics treated the two female drivers at the scene before transferring them to Westmead Hospital in serious but stable conditions.
The male driver of the SUV was not injured in the crash.
Extensive delays are expected in both north and south directions, and motorists are urged to avoid the area as emergency services attend the scene.
Richmond Road remains closed in both directions between Llandilo Road and St Marys Road.
Motorists have been encouraged to use Llandilo Road, Second Avenue, Eighth Avenue, South Creek Road, White Road, Shane Park Road, Stony Creek Road and St Mary’s Road as alternative routes.
