As well as the MC for Smithy’s wedding, Anna’s character provided the pivotal moment where the entire Shipman/West clan confessed that they thought Smithy was making a mistake by marrying Sonia
It’s not the first time Anna and James have worked together as the pair starred in a play together at the Old Vic Theatre back in June called The Constituent.
One fan pointed this out, writing: ‘You were both brilliant in The Constituent – great to see you in this special production!’
Gavin and Stacey fans struggled to hide their delight when Anna appeared on their screens during the Gavin And Stacey finale.
Anna had previously attended the finale’s premiere the week before it aired, leading to questions around whether she would be making an appearance.
However, her cameo, still came as a surprise to some fans, who took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their delight.
One penned: ‘Also love that Anna Maxwell Martin was in Gavin and Stacey. Now come back in Motherland. Please and thank you’
Another wrote: ‘Gavin & Stacey: laugh out loud bits include “are you really wearing those shoes?”, maybe because I was in a wedding this year. And realising the bemused celebrant was the wonderful Anna Maxwell-Martin.’

With Gavin first to share his concerns, the registrar asked other guests to stand if they agreed, leading Smithy’s entire surrogate family to stand in agreement.
Realising that he did indeed love Nessa, Smithy then abandoned Sonia at the altar, rushing to stop his flame from leaving the UK.
The entire family jumped into Dave’s coach and rushed to Southampton, where Nessa was preparing to set sail, and in a scene 17 years in the making, he declared his love for her, and asked her to reconsider leaving.
While an ever-stoic Nessa insisted she wouldn’t propose to Smithy again, instead he returned her offer from five years earlier, finally getting down on one knee and asking her to marry him.
The episode then cut to Smithy and Nessa exchanging their vows at long last in an intimate ceremony in Barry, with the series ending with an emotional montage of the family marking the occasion at The Dolphin pub, before posing for a family snap together.
It was a finale that brought a long-awaited end to the story that began back in 2007, and fans rushed to social media to praise the ‘perfect’ ending
