Lewis Capaldi has delighted fans as he released five new songs for the New Year, despite his career break, and they have already been hailed as ‘beautiful’.

The Scottish sensation, 27, returned to social media for the first time in six months to announce that he was releasing an extended edition of his second album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent.

The singer, who has Tourette’s syndrome, announced he would be taking a break away from the spotlight for his mental health as he took to the stage at Glastonbury in June 2023.

One fan who had already listened to the new additions shortly after midnight gushed: ‘Lewis thank you so much for these 5 new songs. They are so beautiful and honest and they made me feel understood.’

The tracks are called Strangers, A Cure For Minds Unwell, Someone I Could Die For, The Ancient Art Of Always F***ing Up and Old Navy Blue.

Lewis explained: ‘After some back-and-forth about whether it was the right thing to do, I’ve decided it would be a shame for these extra five songs, which are so incredibly special to me, to sit on my hard drive, never to see the light of day.’

The album originally hit number one in the UK charts after its May 2023 release, staying there for two consecutive weeks.

Lewis added on X: ‘I was absolutely terrified of disappointing you all, afraid of not living up to expectations and, in all honesty, scared that the whole thing would be a complete flop.

WHAT IS TOURETTE’S SYNDROME?

Tourette’s syndrome is a neurological condition characterised by a combination of involuntary noises and movements called tics.

It usually starts during childhood and continues into adulthood. Tics can be vocal, physical or both.

In many cases Tourette’s syndrome runs in families and is often associated with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Tourette’s syndrome is named after the French doctor, Georges Gilles de la Tourette, who first described the syndrome and its symptoms in the 19th Century.

There’s no cure for Tourette’s syndrome, but treatment can help to control the symptoms.

‘But thanks to all of you, it wasn’t.

‘It’s mind-blowing to see the songs on this album still resonating with so many of you despite the fact I’ve not been out there promoting it or touring, it means the world to me.

‘Which brings me to the reason for this big b*****d of a letter I’m writing . . . ‘Prior to my decision to f*** off for a bit, I’d always hoped to release an extended version at some point!’

He then revealed that the lengthened album would be out on New Year’s Day, and while many were watching fireworks as the clocks struck midnight, Lewis’ superfans could refresh their streaming platforms to delight in the new release.

And many were quick to thank and congratulate him on the ‘lovely’ tunes, saying: ‘Thank you so much for these new songs, Lewis! I love your honesty in them. I wish you all the best for 2024…

‘Love the new songs so much!! I’m glad you’re doing much better as well Lewis…

‘These songs are just amazing!!! Thank you so much and I hope you have a great day/night <33 I also hope that you're okay.'

The hitmaker also issued an update on his mental health journey in the post.

He said his time off has been ‘going great’ and that he has noticed a ‘marked improvement’ in both his Tourette’s and anxiety.

The singer's supporters wasted no time in listening to the releases, and congratulated Lewis on them - as well as wishing him well after he took a career break to look after his mental health

Tourette’s syndrome is a neurological condition characterised by a combination of involuntary noises and movements called tics.

These symptoms impacted Lewis’ Glastonbury 2023 performance as crowds helped the tearful performer through his song Someone You Loved.

However, he clarified that now would not be the time for his return from time off, saying: ‘For now I’m going to continue taking some time to carry on looking after myself, maybe writing some music and taking a moment to reflect on some of the most incredible years of my life.

‘I want to make absolutely sure I’m 100 per cent before getting back out there again properly for more shows and doing what I love more than anything.

‘Hope this tides you all over until we can get in a room and sing them together some day very soon.’
