A huge fire has broken out in a block of students flats, as footage shows the building covered in roaring flames.
The block, still under construction before the flames erupted, currently forms part of a building site near Caton Road, Lancaster.
The top of the flats is seen covered in a huge, red hot blaze which led to multiple road closures.
The fire emits a massive plume of dark grey smoke which stretches for at least a couple of hundred metres and is heard crackling as it burns.
Although there were no reports of any injuries, emergency services attended the scene, including six fire engines from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
The fire service warned people living nearby who could smell or see smoke to keep their windows and doors shut.
Lancashire Police were also attending as they initiated road closures. In an update, the force said: ‘We are currently assisting the fire service with an incident on Parliament St, Lancaster.
‘This has resulted in numerous road closures: Cable Street from Sainsburys towards Greyhound Bridge, Parliament St (both directions) and Back Caton Road are currently all closed.
‘You are advised to avoid the area which may be closed for some time.’
Bus operator Stagecoach said its buses had been diverted via Bulk Road into Lancaster until further notice.
Locals who shared photos and videos online said the fire came from a new student apartment block in the city.
One person in the area wrote: ‘Construction site on fire near Farmfoods in Lancaster. Please avoid the area.’
‘Please avoid Parliament Street due to an ongoing major incident.’
