An n man who went to Bali to ring in the new year is instead fighting for his life in an induced coma after falling off the back of a moped.

Kevin Malligan, 24, went on the break just weeks before his second child is due to be born in February, but the holiday turned tragic on December 29.

The Sydney man was riding pillion on a moped driven by a friend when it hit a bump and he fell off and hit his head on the road.

Mr Malligan suffered a brain bleed and fractured his neck, and was rushed to the Nussa Dua Hospital where he is in a critical condition.

Despite being 32 weeks pregnant, his wife Leah flew to Bali to say goodbye to her husband in case the worst happens.

‘The next 24 hours is the most crucial because it’s up to him and his own body, whether he recovers or not,’ she told the Sunday Telegraph.

‘He wasn’t doing anything silly, or drinking. He and his friend just hit a bump in the road four minutes away from where they were meant to be.’

Ms Malligan said she had tried to get her husband travel insurance that would cover scooters, but there was nothing available.

‘Already our medical expenses are up to 90 grand and we still have to somehow get him home,’ she said.

Her parents, Jodie and Belinda French, have set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for their daughter and son-in-law.

By Sunday morning it had already raised almost half of its $100,000 goal.

Ms Malligan flew to Bali with Mr Malligan’s father and brother, to be by his side for few days, her parents wrote.

‘This is a very difficult and emotional time for all of us,’ they said.

Early on Sunday, Ms Malligan posted a photo of her at her husband’s bedside and wrote that she wanted ‘to send everyone a massive thankyou for all your donations, support and beautiful messages.

‘We can’t thank our friends, family and the community enough. We will be forever greatful.

‘Kev is stable after his surgery which is more then I could ever wish for. Please keep him in your prayers. You’ve got this Kev.’

Her parents wrote that ‘There will be some substantial medical and other bills that will be forthcoming after such a surgery.

‘We do not want to burden Leah and his family with this at such a difficult time.

‘Leah and Kevin have a two year daughter, Ivy, and are expecting their 2nd child in early February 2024.

‘We can only hope and pray for them in this time of great difficulty.’
