A young couple has survived a hail of bullets after two gunmen shot their car before the man was assaulted in Melbourne’s northwest.

The couple, a 32-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, came under fire outside a Turin Place home at about 7.10 am on Sunday in Keilor Lodge.

The pair were sitting inside a white Holden Commodore when two gunmen in another vehicle allegedly peppered their car with bullets.

The victims remained uninjured in the attack and managed to drive about 100 metres down the road before crashing into a parked car.

Police said the male victim was assaulted after he got out of the smashed car and tried to run away.

Police are investigating whether a conflict between the female victim and her ex-partner was a possible motive for the shooting.

‘It got up to 20 gunshots that went off but during that last lot of gunshots I heard a woman screaming,’ one resident told 9News.

‘It’s a bit scary, it was only because of that woman screaming that made my heart go… and that’s when I rang the police and knew something was really wrong.’

A 30-year-old man was arrested at an address in Taylors Hill on Sunday and was assisting police with their enquiries.
