Kasey Chambers has opened up about her very unusual childhood that saw her traveling around living out of a car.

Speaking with ABC Melbourne drive host Ali Moore, Kasey, 48 revealed that much of her childhood was spent traipsing around the country with her fox hunter father.

‘I grew up in the outback,’ the country star explained. ‘I spent a lot of my early childhood living around a campfire.

‘My dad was a professional fox hunter. This was back in the ’70s when that was actually a job. Thank god it’s not a job now.’

Aside from hunting foxes, Bill also helmed the iconic family musical outfit The Dead Ringer Band, which also featured wife Diane, Kasey and son Nash.

The outfit eventually disbanded in the late 1990s after Bill and Diane divorced.

For much of Kasey’s youth, the family lived a very nomadic lifestyle, living out of their car in the n desert.

‘We lived in the outback,’ she said. ‘We travelled to a different place every night, we lived out of a four-wheel drive.

‘My dad had made this little caravan that we kept all our supplies in that we towed around the whole of the Nullabor Plain through South and Western .

She added that living such a transient lifestyle also meant not having ready access to supermarkets.

‘We lived completely off the land, all the food we ate was whatever my dad hunted and we cooked it all on the open fire,’ she said.

Reminiscing about her youth, Kasey added that the open campfire had played a large part in her upbringing, as well as helping to ignite her love of singing.

‘That’s sort of where I found my connection with music and I just have the most beautiful fond memories.’

Being immersed in wide open spaces is something that is still a bit part of Kasey’s life, although now she explores the outback in a little more comfort.
