Actress Julianne Moore’s semi-autobiographical book about a child embracing their freckles has been added to the Trump administration’s banned book list.

The Still Alice star, 64, revealed her first book Freckleface Strawberry is barred from schools run by the Department of Defense.

She shared her ‘great shock’ at the revelation, describing the book as one ‘about a seven year old girl who dislikes her freckles but eventually learns to live with them.’

In the book, the little girl ‘realizes that she is different just like everybody else.’

Moore said: ‘It is a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle, but are united by our humanity and our community.’

The decision to prohibit the book in DoD classrooms comes amid a wider push to prevent diversity, equity and inclusion practises being taught.

Other topics like transgender and immigration issues have also reportedly been banned.

Moore said that she herself is a graduate of a DoD school, raised by a father who is a Vietman veteran and spent his career within the US Army.

‘I could not be prouder of him and his service to our country,’ she said.

‘It is galling for me to realize that kids like me, growing up with a parent in the service and attending a @dodea_edu school will not have access to a book written by someone whose life experience is so similar to their own.’

Moore said she simply can’t wrap her head around what in her picture book was ‘so controversial… that caused it to be banned by the US government.’

‘I am truly saddened and never thought I would see this in a country where freedom of speech and expression is a constitutional right.’

DoD schools are in place for children of service members and civilian employees of the defense department, with almost 70,000 students attending 161 schools.

Moore received support from fellow celebrities after sharing her heartbreak on Instagram.

Michelle Pfiefer asked: ‘Are you joking? How can we get this book?’

And Chloe Grace Moretz added: ‘Wow, truly shocked about this? Literally why?’
