A jogger, 29, has died after collapsing during the Great North Run.
He passed away in hospital on Sunday after feeling ill on the route from Newcastle to South Shields.
Yesterday’s race was brought to a stop so emergency services could reach the man – who fell ill close to the end of the 13.1 mile route.
The Great Run Company – which organises the Great North Run – have confirmed that the man’s next of kin have been informed and the cause of death will be determined after a medical examination.
A spokesperson for The Great Run Company told : ‘With great sadness, The Great Run Company confirms the death of a participant in the Great North Run on Sunday, 8 September 2024.
‘A 29-year-old male collapsed, received immediate medical treatment, and later passed away in hospital. His next of kin have been informed.
‘The whole organisational team at the Great North Run express their sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
‘In respect of the wishes of the participant’s family, no further details will be released. The cause of death will be determined in due course following medical examination.’
