Podcaster Joe Rogan has revealed the one topic he would never discuss with his wife and children as he shared an array of theories about the universe.

The eponymous host of The Joe Rogan Experience was discussing human existence with comedian Andrew Schultz in an episode that debuted last week – when he revealed that he would never bring up the topic around his wife and children.

The bizarre conversation began when Rogan asked Schultz, ‘How do you feel about this world that we’re living in, this world that seems more and more like it’s not real? More and more like it’s a f***ing simulation?’

Rogan went on to explain he is ‘kind of convinced’ humans are living in a computer-generated environment like in the Matrix.

‘There’s something more to reality than what meets the eye, there’s more to it than what you can put on a scale or what you can put a ruler to. There’s more to this thing,’ he said.

‘This thing’s made out of like, some very bizarre energy that’s attached to consciousness, that’s what I think.’

Bewildered, Schultz asked the podcaster what he was talking about.

‘It’s inevitable that one day they will achieve a simulation that is indiscernible from reality. No doubt about it,’ Rogan explained. ‘They’ve gotten real close.’

He then went on to pose a series of rhetorical questions to his stunned guest.

‘Is that the ultimate progression of technology? Is the ultimate progression of technology transcending physical reality and becoming completely digital life?

‘So if that is possible, how do we know that it hasn’t already happened? How can we know if it hasn’t already happened?’

Still, he admitted that if the world ‘is scripted, it would be filled with a lot of s*** that’s exactly like what happened – Trump would get shot in the ear and say “Fight, fight, fight,” you would have Elon Musk at the inauguration looking like he’s on another planet.’

When Schultz then started asking him about his theory, Rogan said he thinks ‘destiny is truly in our hands.

‘I think that the actual way that things happen and work is dependent entirely on the level of consciousness the people have that are experiencing it.

‘It sounds very hippy, dippy and wooey,’ he admitted, but said it ‘comes from a lot of different things.’

Eventually, Schultz asked Rogan whether he ever brings this theory up to his wife and kids – to which the comedian responded: ‘No, that’s too weird to talk to kids about.’

Rogan married Jessica Ditzel in 2009 and the two went on to have two children together, Lola and Rosy. The UFC commentator also adopted Kayja, Ditzel's daughter from a previous relationship

He also said of his wife, Jessica Ditzel, ‘She would go “What?”

‘You know my wife, she’d be like, “What the f*** are you talking about?’

That is not to say he and Ditzel do not have deeper conversations, Rogan clarified.

‘If she wants to talk about something like that, she’ll bring it up. Like if she wants to talk about something heavy, it’s not like I wouldn’t talk about something heavy with her, but generally like I come home from work, she’s been with the kids she’s doing this and that, we eat dinner, we have fun, “How was school?,” have a good time, maybe we’ll watch a little Severance together,’ he said of their routine.

‘But if she’s like, “Did you ever think that maybe this is all – is it real?” I’d be like, “I’m so glad you brought this up.”‘

Despite Rogan’s odd claims, the so-called ‘simulation theory’ is popular with other figures including Elon Musk, who said the odds that we’re living in a ‘base reality’ – the real universe as opposed to a simulated one – are ‘one in billions’.

What is the simulation theory?

The simulation theory suggests that what humans perceive as reality is actually a computer-generated simulation.

Human beings are unknowingly being fed this simulated consciousness either for their own good or for nefarious means.

In 2003, University of Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrum first proposed the argument that ‘we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation’.

Simulation theory is explored in sci-fi films including ‘The Matrix’ (1999) and its sequels, as well as ‘The Thirteenth Floor’ (1999) and ‘Dark City’ (1998).

Melvin Vopson, an associate professor in physics at the University of Portsmouth has also sought to prove the theory, sharing what he believes are clues that we live in a simulated reality.

The fact there’s limits to how fast light and sound can travel suggest they may be governed by the speed of a computer processor, for example.

And the laws of physics that govern the universe are also akin to computer code, he says.

One of the most convincing clues, however, is the symmetry that we observe in the everyday world, from butterflies to flowers, snowflakes and starfish.

Symmetry is everywhere because it’s how the machines ‘render the digitally constructed world’, Professor Vopson told DailyMail.com in 2023.

‘This abundance of symmetry (rather than asymmetry) in the universe is something that has never been explained,’ he said.

‘When we build or design things we have to use the most symmetric shapes to simplify the process.

‘Just imagine building a house from bricks that are not the standard shape of a brick.

‘If the bricks were in a totally irregular shape, the construction would be almost impossible or much more complicated.

‘The same is when we design computer programs or virtual realities – and this maximizes efficiency and minimizes energy consumption or computational power.’
