Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, once described herself as the rock star couple’s ‘fix-it baby,’ explaining that she ‘always knew their relationship was toxic’ and that she believed they welcomed her in the hopes that becoming parents would solve their ‘problems.’
But unfortunately, it didn’t – and Frances, now 31, has had a life marred by tragedy and heartbreak fueled by her parents’ rampant drug use, which eventually lead to her struggling with addiction herself when she got older.
When Kurt and Courtney first got together in the ’90s, they bonded over their mutual love of the wild side – and it was no secret that the early days of their romance were filled with wild partying and many illicit substances.
Before she was even born, Frances was surrounded by scandal, since there were furious rumors that Courtney did heroin while she was pregnant – something she later admitted to.
It was revealed this week that Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love ‘s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, had walked down the aisle with her boyfriend – Tony Hawk’s son, Riley Hawk
Frances has had a life marred by tragedy and heartbreak fueled by her parents’ rampant drug use, which eventually lead to her struggling with addiction herself when she got older
Kurt tragically took his life before Frances’ second birthday, and as her mother continued to battle addiction, Frances was removed from her custody by CPS on multiple occasions.
When she was only 11, she witnessed her mom overdosing on painkillers – and the youngster even made the actress some tea while they waited for the ambulance together.
By the time she reached age 17, Frances has said that she was ‘so f**king bitter, angry, upset, and resentful’ towards her mother for what she had been through.
She ended up filing a temporary restraining order against her and going to live with her grandmother instead, which resulted in Courtney launching a very-public tirade against the then-teen, in which she called her ‘deluded’ and ‘deceptive.’
But now, after losing her dad to suicide at a young age, having a front row seat to her mother’s battle with drugs as a child, and overcoming her own addictions, it seems as though she has finally found happiness. She’s seen as a baby with her parents
For years, the two had a very-strained relationship – and it wasn’t until they reconnected over the release of a documentary about Kurt in 2015 that they finally found peace.
But even after she made up with her mother – Frances’ problems continued. She began struggling with addiction, and once admitted that it become so severe that she didn’t believe she’d live to age 30.
Frances has claimed that her issues were only fueled by the massive fortune that her dad left her – she inherited all of her famous father’s $140 million earnings, and reportedly receives an additional $100,000 each month from his royalties.
Frances has spoken negatively about her wealth, explaining that it’s made her feel extremely ‘guilty’ and left her spending ‘excessively’ – but she turned her life around after suffering from a near-death experience on an airplane and has now been sober for years.
She’s also made it clear that she does not anything to do with Hollywood – calling it ‘pretentious, sh**ty, and filled to the brim with the worst people she’s ever met,’ and turning down many movie roles over the years, including Bella Swan in Twilight.

It was no secret that the early days of their romance were filled with wild celebrations, late-night club visits, and imprudent drug use.
Just months into their romance, the Nirvana front man and the singer found out that they were expecting their first child together.
They tied the knot in February of 1992 on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii, and welcomed Frances in August of that year.
But being born to two of the biggest stars in the world meant Frances was thrust into the spotlight almost immediately – and thanks to her parents’ very-public infatuation with the wild side, she was also the subject of scandal very quickly.
Just days after she was born, Child Protective Services launched an investigation into whether or not the couple was fit to be parents after rumors began to swirl that Courtney had used drugs while she was pregnant.

She said: ‘We got pills and then we went down to Alphabet City and Kurt wore a hat, I wore a hat, and we copped some dope.
‘Then we got high and went to Saturday Night Live. After that, I did heroin for a couple of months.’

Decades later – in 2015 – Courtney admitted to using heroin while she was pregnant in the HBO documentary, Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck.
She said: ‘I used it once then stopped. I knew [the baby] would be fine.’

In April of 1994, when Frances was almost two, Kurt tragically took his own life – and he mentioned the immense impact that becoming a father had on him in his suicide note.
‘I have a goddess of a wife who sweats ambition and empathy and a daughter who reminds me too much of what I used to be: full of love and joy, kissing every person she meets because everyone is good and will do her no harm,’ he wrote.
‘And that terrifies me to the point to where I can barely function. I can’t stand the thought of Frances becoming the miserable, self-destructive death rocker that I’ve become… her life will be so much happier without me.’

Hours later, Courtney overdosed on OxyContin and was rushed to the hospital – and she later recalled how her young daughter waited with her for the ambulance to arrive.
‘That’s the only time my daughter has ever, ever, ever pitched in one of my little crises,’ she vowed.
‘I made it fun. I said it was going to be gross and I was going to have to make myself throw up, but it was going to be OK.’
Following the incident, Frances lived with her grandmother for two years before returning back to Courtney in 2005.
‘Until she was about 13, things were pretty idyllic. Then I just fell apart,’ Courtney later reflected to Rolling Stone.
Her tumultuous relationship with her mom: Frances has admitted to ‘resenting’ Courtney for years because of her difficult upbringing, and she even filed a restraining order against her when she was 17

Frances has had a strained relationship with her mother for years due to her difficult childhood.
In 2009, when she was 17, it was revealed that Frances had chosen to move back in with her grandmother – but her decision sparked a fierce reaction from Courtney.
‘Courtney’s been clean for years and is perfectly fine,’ her lawyer insisted to People magazine at the time.
‘This is simply about Frances preferring to live with her grandmother at this time – Frances is 17 and a strong-willed child, and this is a decision she made on her own.’
‘My mother held me, cried on me and just said, “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry,”‘ Frances recalled of watching the movie with her mom. ‘It was the first time my mom had apologized for anything relating to my youth’
After the news hit the web, Courtney went on a nasty social media tirade against the then-teen, calling her ‘deluded’ and ‘deceptive.’
‘I hate to sound cold but any kid of mine who pulls this s**t has lost her position… she was deceptive, she lied and she’s lying to herself,’ she wrote.
‘My daughter is not always honest. She’s deluded. She thinks she has all this money. The point is I have all the money she has.’
At the time, Frances was granted a temporary restraining order against her mother. According to court documents, she said Courtney had ‘taken drugs for as long as she could remember’ and that she had to ‘constantly worry’ about her wellbeing as a child.
For years, Frances and Courtney had a rocky relationship, but they eventually reconnected in 2015, after the release of the documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck – which Frances executive-produced.
They publicly reunited for the first time in five years at the premiere, and Frances later told Rolling Stone that seeing the movie with her mom helped put an end to the tension between them.
‘My mother held me, cried on me and just said, “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry,”‘ Frances recalled.
‘She just kept saying it over and over. But then she said, “Do you realize how much your father loved you?” And I said, “Yeah, I do.”‘
Frances explained that it was ‘the first time her mom had apologized for anything relating to her youth.’
In 2019, she recalled being ‘so f**king bitter, angry, upset, and resentful’ towards her mother ‘for a really long time.’ But she said their relationship improved after they both ‘grew up’
She told the outlet that they had since ‘resolved a lot of their issues,’ adding, ‘I grew up. And she grew up too.
‘I was exceptionally lucky to have Courtney as an example of what not to do. She knows that, and has accounted for it.’
In 2019, she reflected on her upbringing during an appearance on RuPaul’s What’s the Tee podcast, and she recalled being ‘so f**king bitter, angry, upset, and resentful’ towards her mother ‘for a really long time.’
But she said their relationship improved after she entered adulthood thanks to ‘open communication, love, and truth.’
‘When my mom is on a right and healthy path, she is one of the most fulfilling, beautiful, intelligent and kind people I ever met,’ she added.
As for her father, she has spoken highly of him on numerous occasions – but she did once admit that she’s not a fan of his music.
‘I don’t really like Nirvana that much,’ she told Rolling Stone. ‘Sorry. The grunge scene is not what I’m interested in.’
She’s also spoken out about her struggle to ‘escape’ her father’s legacy and make a name for herself separate from her parents.
‘I was around 15 when I realized [my dad] was inescapable. Even if I was in a car and had the radio on, there’s my dad,’ she explained to Rolling Stone.
‘He’s larger than life. and our culture is obsessed with dead musicians. We love to put them on a pedestal.
‘I’ll never escape how gigantic Kurt is. And that’s OK. I accept that. I’m lucky I have that ambition from my parents – but I want my successes to be my own.’
She wants nothing to do with Hollywood: Frances turned down many movie roles, stepped away from modeling after her career took off, and once went on a tirade against ‘self absorbed’ Kendall Jenner
It’s been said that Frances (seen in 2018) was offered numerous acting roles – like Bella Swan in Twilight – but that she turned them all down
Thanks to her famous parents, many thought Frances was destined for stardom from a young age – but it seems she wants nothing to do with Hollywood.
Not only did she turn down many movie roles that were offered to her as a teen, but she also stepped away from modeling when she was at the height of her career.
She first stepped in front of the camera in 2006 – when she only 14 – when she posed for Elle UK in her father’s clothes, and in 2008, she landed an internship at Rolling Stone magazine.
In the years that followed, Frances graced the cover of a few magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Schon!, and she even became the face of Marc Jacob’s Spring/Summer campaign in 2017.
But after the Marc Jacob’s campaign, she announced that she was taking a step back from the world of modeling because she felt ‘out of her comfort zone.
She told Vogue at the time, ‘I don’t think I’ll be modeling for anybody else for a very long time — this is 100 per cent outside my comfort zone.’
‘I wouldn’t have done it with anyone other than Marc. I don’t model unless I think the project is cool, and I don’t put my name behind something that I don’t genuinely believe in.’
In 2009, it was reported that she was being eyed for the role of Alice in Tim Burton’s movie Alice in Wonderland, but that she said no because she didn’t want to become an actress.

In 2019, Frances uploaded a video of herself performing a song she had written for her dad – but she insisted that she didn’t want to be ‘pigeonholed’ into following in her parents’ footsteps
Courtney also once revealed that her daughter was offered the role of Bella Swan in the Twilight films, which ultimately went to Kristen Stewart.
‘Someone just saw a picture of her in a magazine and sent me the script for Twilight,’ Courtney said on Howard Stern’s radio show in 2013. ‘She was 13. It would have destroyed her life.’
Frances has dabbled in music – in 2019, she uploaded a video of herself performing a song she had written for her dad – but she insisted that she didn’t want to be ‘pigeonholed’ into following in her parents’ footsteps.
‘I know you weren’t meant to stay in this place. Sometimes I find it hard to look at my own face,’ the lyrics to the emotional track read.
‘Maybe one day I will talk to you, if I’m lucky it won’t be too soon. They say I’m soft and resemble an angel. What happens to angels when they die?’
When asked about how she thinks her dad would have reacted to her following in his footsteps and pursuing music, she told E! News at the time, ‘I would hope that he would be proud of the human being I am even if he didn’t like the art I am putting out. That’s all I would ask of anyone in my life.’
She added of her career, ‘With regards to music, I don’t want to pigeonhole myself and say I am a musician or a visual artist because I feel like it’s all-encompassing.
‘I feel like every bit of my art is related to the other. So do I want to pursue my music further and see it come to fruition and see something further and see something palpable? Absolutely.’
In 2013, Frances got into a nasty feud with Kendall Jenner, after she became infuriated with the reality star for complaining on Twitter.
‘Just wish things could be easier sometimes man,’ Kendall wrote at the time.
‘Oh shh. There are kids on earth abandoned and homeless who forcibly drink contaminated water because clean water isn’t accessible,’ Frances fired back.
She’s also made it clear that she does not anything to do with Hollywood – calling it ‘pretentious, sh**ty, and filled to the brim with the worst people she’s ever met’
‘Oh ya, not to mention, cancer, famine, poverty, drought, disease, natural disasters, death.
‘F**k. Humans are so self involved… I’d like to thank my parents for providing me with a high IQ and I’d like to thank my grams for encouraging me not to be a self absorbed idiot.’
Now, Frances’ main passion is painting, as she often shares photos of her artwork to Instagram (one of which, is seen above) and has debuted her work at a series of exhibitions and galleries over the years
Kendall then replied, ‘An individuals feelings are relative to their environment. you don’t know me, you don’t even know what I was referring to.
‘I am aware that I am very privileged and blessed, and I’m thankful for that everyday. I know there are greater problems in the world.
‘I pray for those people every night and give back as much as I can. So who are you to judge me?’
She also slammed the celebrity world during her chat on RuPaul’s podcast, explaining that it’s ‘filled to the brim with the worst people I’ve ever met.’
‘It’s hard to submit yourself into that world because it’s so pretentious and sh**ty. It’s filled to the brim with the worst people I’ve ever met,’ she said.

Her million dollar fortune: Frances inherited her dad’s massive earnings and has the rights to his image and music, but has said that her ‘relationship with money’ lead to her struggling with addiction
Frances inherited all of her famous father’s $140 million earnings, and reportedly receives an additional $100,000 each month from his royalties
Frances started inheriting her dad’s massive fortune – worth $140 million – when she turned 18, and she got the rest on her 30th birthday in 2022.
It’s been reported that she receives an addition $100,000 per month for his music and image rights.
But she has admitted to feeling ‘guilty’ over getting so much money despite not ‘earning it herself.’
‘My relationship to money is different because I didn’t earn it,’ she shared. ‘It’s almost like this big, giant loan that I’ll never get rid of.
‘I have an almost foreign relationship to it or guilt because it feels like money from somebody that I’ve never met, let alone haven’t earned myself.’
Like her parents, Frances has struggled with addiction – and she said her problems were fueled by her access to so much money at a young age.
‘The one way that I was shown how to live was to live in excess, like, live beyond your means,’ she reflected on RuPaul’s podcast.
‘It took me stepping away from that and getting sober in order to realize that no matter how much money you think you have, it’s not permanent.’
But she vowed at the time, ‘I’d like to say that within the last two years I have taken real accountability for every single thing, talking to the people in charge of my money and having in-depth meetings as well as recognizing that you don’t have to live lavishly in order to live well.
‘Like, it’s not necessary to have UberXX or whatever it is every single time you are going five minutes away. Get the Uber economy if you are going ten minutes away, it’s OK, it’s alright.’
Frances first spoke about her drug problems in 2018, when she announced that she was celebrating two years of sobriety in an emotional Instagram post.
‘The fact that I’m sober isn’t really public knowledge, decidedly and deliberately,’ she she said at the time.
She has been open about her battles with addiction, and celebrated two years of sobriety in 2018. She’s seen in March of 2018
‘But I think it’s more important to put aside my fear about being judged or misunderstood or typecast as one specific thing.
‘I want to have the capacity to recognize and observe that my journey might be informative, even helpful to other people who are going through something similar or different.
‘It is an everyday battle to be in attendance for all the painful, bazaar, uncomfortable, tragic, f**ked up things that have ever happened or will ever happen.
‘Self-destruction and toxic consumption and deliverance from pain is a lot easier to adhere to.
‘Undeniably, for myself and those around me becoming present is the best decision I have ever made.’
And on her 30th birthday last year, she spoke out about her journey again – and she admitted that she wasn’t sure she would make it to that age.
‘I made it! Honestly, 20 year old Frances wasn’t sure that was going to happen,’ she wrote.
‘At the time, an intrinsic sense of deep self loathing dictated by insecurity, destructive coping mechanisms, and more trauma than my body or brain knew how to handle, informed how I saw myself and the world through a lens of resentment for being brought into a life that seemingly attracted so much chaos and the kind of pain tied to grief that felt inescapable.
Frances explained that a near-death experience on a plane forced her to want to turn things around and ‘transform her pain into knowledge.’
She recalled how one of the engines caught fire, and while they were able to land safely, the incident gave her a newfound ‘gratitude’ for life.
Frances’ rollercoaster ride love life: Before marrying Riley, she went through a messy divorce – and was forced to shut down rumors that she had a relationship with her dad’s former bandmate

Frances’ road to finding love was not the easiest, and she went through a messy divorce before walking down the aisle with Riley.
She wed her first husband, musician Isaiah Silva, in 2014, but they split in March 2016.
Afterwards, a legal battle between Frances, Courtney, and Isaiah ensued over one of Kurt’s guitars.
There were also rumors that she dated her dad’s former Nirvana bandmate David Grohl (left) after they reconnected in 2012, which she was quick to shut down
The instrument was famously used by the rocker during one of Nirvana’s appearances on MTV: Unplugged.
Isaiah ended up with possession of it after the divorce, and the mother-daughter duo are still fighting hard to get it back.
There were also rumors that she dated her dad’s former Nirvana bandmate David Grohl after they reconnected in 2012, which she was quick to shut down.
Speculation arose that something was going on between them after Courtney went on a Twitter rant in which she accused David, then 43, of ‘hitting’ on her then-20-year-old daughter.
‘I hear from Frannie’s roommate that @DaveGrohl hit on Frances,’ she wrote. ‘It’s natural she’d be curious to find out why I don’t like this man, and why her father doesn’t.
‘I’m sure Frances can take care of herself because she is of age, and I love her and want her to live her life.’
David responded by calling Courtney’s accusations ‘upsetting, offensive and absolutely untrue.’
Frances also released a statement, which said, ‘While I’m generally silent on the affairs of my biological mother, her recent tirade has taken a gross turn.

TMZ reported this week that they had secretly tied the knot on October 7 in Los Angeles
‘I have never been approached by Dave Grohl in more than a platonic way. I’m in a monogamous relationship and very happy.’
The drummer later reflected on the drama during an appearance on the Boston radio station WAAF.
‘I hadn’t seen her since she was a little kid,’ he explained. ‘People that knew Kurt, when you meet her for the first time, you’re like wow, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
‘I didn’t think it was creepy, but I sure did feel like she was very familiar. She seemed very familiar to me, for sure.’
