A Noughties pop legend who had bottles and even a wheelchair thrown at her while she performed at Reading Festival has turned her back on fame.

Karen DiConcetto, formerly known by the moniker Daphne, shot to fame as one-half of an American pop duo which took the UK by storm.

Musical act Daphne And Celeste – featuring Karen and Celeste Cruz – burst onto the scene at the turn of the century with their debut single Ooh Stick You.

The teens achieved further success in June 2000 with the release of cheerleader-style chant song U.G.L.Y. – famously included in the soundtrack of cheerleader film Bring It On.

But, Karen is now worlds away from that life, living peacefully as mother of son Samir, four, and married to husband Damian.

She keeps her fans up-to-date with her everyday life where she regularly makes political statements and has voiced her support for Kamala Harris.

One of the more memorable moments of her career came in August 2000 when she and Daphne were invited to perform at the Reading Festival – and were immediately bottled.

Despite being hit with bottles of water, toilet paper, bottles of urine, a bag of meat and even a wheelchair, the girls not only stay put, but they even mocked the crowd.

‘You guys are such a good crowd,’ Celeste declared at the time, while Daphne added: ‘I’m loving the signs. “Die!” Yes, I will!’

However, for their safety, the girls left after performing two of their three scheduled songs.

Fans were incensed that the organisers would invite bubblegum artists to perform rather than the alternative music the festival was known for.

Karen later proudly declared: ‘Backstage, Slipknot and Rage Against the Machine were coming up to us and telling us how hardcore we were – how they wouldn’t have stayed out there.’

Reflecting on the event in a chat with The Guardian in 2015, Daphne And Celeste revealed that Celeste’s mother got hit by the onslaught and it took three people to lift the wheelchair onto the stage.

When Karen reminded Celeste that her mother got hit, Celeste said: ‘Oh yeah.

‘Because, of course, we invited our families along, not thinking at all how it would be for them! When we came off, my sister was crying!’

Karen added: ‘Someone lost their mobility because they hated us so much!’

The BBC wrote at the time: ‘They were only scheduled to sing to their backing tape for 15 minutes but their performance will be infamous for years to come.’

They released single You And I Alone and, three years later, BB.

Daphne And Celeste followed BB up with their second studio album: Daphne & Celeste Save the World – 18 years after debut We Didn’t Say That!

Both the singles and the album failed to chart.
