A California man has been arrested for raping a quadriplegic woman inside of her apartment 24 years after the abominable crime took place.
Michael Lamonte Evans, 50, has been accused of breaking into a woman’s East Bay home and sexually assaulting her on December 6, 2000.
The victim – who was paralyzed from the neck down – was asleep and home alone when the aggressor crept in through her apartment’s sliding back door, Concord police Sergeant Chris Souza told The Sacramento Bee.
But the case ‘went cold’ after DNA samples collected at the time did not lead to any arrests, according to a statement from the Concord Police Department. The samples were entered into a national database.
The department announced on Wednesday that the Special Victim’s Unit discovered that Evans’ DNA matched the collections from over two decades ago.
Evans, a Los Angeles resident, was already in Los Angeles County’s custody for an unrelated parole violation. His DNA was added to the database earlier this year after he was arrested for another sex crime, The Sacramento Bee reported.
He was charged with forcible rape by the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office and his bail has been set at $1 million.
Evans is going to be extradited to Contra Costa County to face his charges, the department said.

‘We are deeply saddened that the victim in this case passed away several years ago,’ the department wrote.
‘We extend our gratitude to her friends and family, whose support and assistance was extremely important in this investigation.’
The vulnerable woman passed away in 2015 for unknown reasons.
Souza said ‘this crime was particularly heinous’ because she ‘had no way of defending herself,’ according to The Sacramento Bee.
In a strikingly similar crime, a Utah man pleaded guilty to repeatedly raping his disabled stepdaughter earlier this year.
Brian Kenneth Urban, 52, was caught on camera as he brutally assaulting Ashley Vigil, 31.
The woman died weeks after Urban pleaded guilty in April.
Vigil had a rare genetic condition called Rett syndrome that hinders brain development. Less than 1,000 people have it in the US – almost everyone with the disorder is a female.
The Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office charged Evans with forcible rape, the Concord Police Department announced on Wednesday
Before this horrifying attack, a Haitian migrant was charged with raping a disabled teenage girl at a Boston shelter in March.
Cory Alvarez, 26, was charged with child rape after he arrived in America through President Joe Biden’s Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan (CHNV) parole program.
Alvarez pleaded not guilty to aggravated rape of a child.
He had entered the country through the Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan (CHNV) parole processes.
