A man has died after two boats collided in Sydney Harbour during a yacht race.
Emergency services were called to New Beach Road in Darling Point following reports the two vessels collided about 6.30pm on Friday.
A man in his 50s, who is yet to be formally identified, sustained a severe chest injury in the crash and died at the scene.
Ambulances and police cars were seen parked at the Cruising Yacht Club of as officers talked to witnesses after the crash.
‘s biggest sailing event, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, is hosted by the club on December 26 and it is understood the two vessels which collided were taking part in the preliminary Cabbage Tree Island Race held on Friday evening.
Officers attached to Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command were aided by members of the Marine Area Command who attended the scene.
Skippers of both boats involved in the crash will be subject to mandatory testing and both vessels have been seized for mechanical examination.
Investigations into the incident have commenced.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
