A male cyclist has died after he was struck and trapped underneath a bus near Taronga Zoo in Sydney.

The man, aged in his 50s, was hit on Bradleys Head Road in Mosman, on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, about 10.35am on Sunday.

Emergency crews raced to the scene and a specialist medical team was flown in by CareFlight.

The cyclist is yet to be formally identified.

The bus driver was uninjured and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

The four passengers on board the bus at the time were uninjured.

‘Officers attached to North Shore Police Area Command established a crime scene which will be examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit,’ a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

Traffic diversions are currently in place and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

Mosman buses on routes 100 and 238 are diverting away from Bradleys Head Road due to the crash.

There are no buses to or from Taronga Zoo Wharf and buses are starting and ending trips at Mosman Junction.

The F2 ferry to Taronga Zoo arrives at Taronga Zoo Wharf and travellers have been warned to reconsider their planned routes.

LiveTraffic is advising visitors to the zoo to use the staff entrance at the corner of Whiting beach Road and Prince Albert street.
