Hillwalkers in Cornwall have kicked up a stink after their local council blocked an iconic sea view by plonking a giant dog waste bin in front of a popular clifftop memorial bench.

Locals were shocked when they came across the smelly eyesore newly installed on Pennance Point, overlooking Swanpool Beach in Falmouth.

Efforts are now being made to have it swiftly removed after they complained to their town councillor Jude Robinson who has asked Cornwall Council to move it.

She contacted the network manager who she says has promised will get back to her when she returns from leave.

Ms Robinson said: ‘The magnificent view from a bench overlooking Pennance Point and Swanpool beach has a new addition; a dog bin, of the bigger variety, placed smack in the eye-line, thanks to Cornwall Council’s busywork department.

‘Now walkers on the coast path can admire the chunky lines of the bin at their leisure; that’s pretty much all they can admire from this memorial bench and one-time vantage point. Job well done, lads!’

In the meantime she is urging all who are offended by the bin to get in touch with her so she can forward their complaints on to the council or to contact the council themselves.

Ms Robinson said: ‘The reason the big bin was put there in the first place is because there was a smaller bin and people kept vandalising it.

‘We’ve all had enough of dog poo thrown everywhere – so it was put up with good intention.

‘It has divided people a bit which is a shame.

‘It is a tribute bench too, so if you sit on that bench and all you can see is the bin, I get it.

‘But some say it doesn’t matter at all where it is.

‘I took this photo last week from one of the benches on the coast path and sent to Cornwall Council asking if they would move the bin.

‘The views from the coast path are fabulous and should be protected so that people can just sit and enjoy them.

‘I hope that people who agree will contact me to support that or Cornwall Council and ask for it to be moved just a few feet away.

‘I’ve offered to help with re-siting.’
