Drew Barrymore has confirmed that Happy Gilmore 2 is in the works, revealing that Adam Sandler has written a sequel to the 1996 sports comedy.
The child actress-turned talk show host, 49, was thrilled when Christopher McDonald – who portrayed Shooter McGavin in the original film – recently hinted that the sequel was happening.
Discussing the subject in a preview clip her talk show, Drew explained how she had texted her Fifty First Dates co-star Adam Sandler, 57, to find out if it he’d written a new screenplay.
The actress said: ‘Are you kidding me? I want it. I need it and I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison.
‘And then I sent Sandler a video of that and then he sent me another video back and I’m waiting to see if he’s confirming about the Happy Gilmore 2 script…

‘Because actor Christopher McDonald, who was Shooter McGavin, the bad guy. He was in the original film… he claims that Adam recently showed him a copy of the first draft to the sequel of Happy Gilmore.
‘And so I’m waiting to find out if Christopher McDonald is correct, which I’m not doubting him. I’m a proper journalist, I sent him a picture of all of us [at the show].’
The clip then jumped and rejoined Drew as she looked at her phone and excitedly announced: ‘Well, this just in. I have breaking news. So I’ll just say this from my source that it is in process… So there is a process and that process is in process.’
Responding to the clip, which was posted on Instagram, fans were overjoyed and rapidly commented expressing their excitement.
‘This is excitinggggg!!’ wrote one fan with another adding: ‘Yes. I’m here for this!’ while someone else gushed: ‘OH it’s Time!!! AWESOME!!!.’
At the end of March, during an The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima, Christopher McDonald revealed that Adam Sandler had unexpectedly shown him a first draft of the long-awaited sequel.
‘I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ”McDonald, you’re gonna love this,”
‘I said, ”What?” He says, ”How about that,” and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.’

After Happy Gilmore, he continued as a much sought-after character actor working on shows such as The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire and The Good Wife.
Allen Covert, who played disheveled homeless caddy Otto in Happy Gilmore, had previously had roles in both Airheads and Billy Madison.
He went onto appear in The Wedding Singer and Big Daddy, while also working as a founder and author of Cherrytree Books, a company that specializes in children’s literature for the iPad.
Julie Bowen’s role as Virginia Venit in Happy Gilmore provided a springboard for a part in Multiplicity and recurring parts in TV shows such as ER and Lost. Additionally, the actress has popped up in Horrible Bosses, Family Guy and Children’s Hospital.
Nowadays, Julie is best known these days for playing Claire Dunphy on Modern Family, a role that has nabbed her two Emmy awards.

The unsuccessful ice hockey player discovers that he has a talent for golf and competes in a tournament to raise money and save his grandmother’s house.
When he learns he has the surprising and unexpected talent to drive a golf ball over 400 feet, he wins a local tournament and joins the PGA, where he tangles with McGavin, who thinks he’s bad for the game.
The film also stars Julie Bowen as PGA tour publicist Virginia Venit, Carl Weathers as Chubbs, the golf pro who teaches him the finer points of the game, along with a memorable cameo from The Price Is Right host Bob Barker.
The film was a modest success, earning $41.2 million worldwide from a $12 million budget, and it would become a cult classic on home video.
