A California police officer was killed and another was severely injured on Saturday night following a standoff with a barricaded suspect.

A suspect opened fire with a rifle, according to local reports, hitting two cops who returned fire in Baldwin Park, Los Angeles County, around 7.20pm.

One suspect has been taken into custody, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. There are reports that a second suspect may have been involved, but Baldwin Park police have not confirmed that detail.

A video from witnesses showed at least two SWAT vehicles and many patrol cars surrounding a home with officers pointing firearms at an unseen suspect.

Air units were also seen circling the neighborhood, according to KTLA.

The injured officers were transported to a nearby hospital in serious condition, one by air and another by ground, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

However, one of the unnamed officers was later pronounced dead, according to the LA Times.

The condition of the other wounded officer is unknown.

The Baldwin Park Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies, has cordoned off the area, however, there is no longer an active threat, according to Citizen.com.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was also on scene to assist with the investigation, according to CBS News.

Additional details surrounding the circumstances of the incident remain unclear as authorities continue their investigation.

This is a developing story.
