The wide open spaces of Maine are perfect for those looking to live life off the grid.

Large swaths of the state aren’t connected to public utilities, making it an ideal location for off-grid properties and for those who enjoy self-sufficiency and living remotely, using alternate sources of power including solar, wind or a generator.

Whether it’s oceanfront views, wooded seclusion, mountain vistas or lakeside retreats, there’s an off-the-grid home in Maine to suit everyone’s tastes.

There are a number of properties at various price points looking to be snapped up.

This cottage in Milbridge, a village of a little more than 1,000 people, is priced at $400,000 with a tremendous view.

Perched on a bluff with 500 feet of oceanfront in an area known as the Bold Coast, the two-bedroom, one-bathroom home was built in 1988.

The home currently uses propane for power, and a set of solar panels can be reconfigured in order to provide more power by solar. There is no access to the electric grid.

The home has hot water and a flushable toilet with an in-house septic system.

Although the current owner lives there only in the warmer months, the well-insulated 1,500-square-foot home would be warm enough for a permanent resident to survive the winter.

‘It feels like you’re on an island,’ Charlotte Horovitz said to the Bangor Daily News. ‘You’re disconnected, you don’t see anyone. You hear the ocean and the birds, and that’s it.’

For a slightly smaller price tag of $319,900, is a two-bedroom, one-bathroom home situated on 52 acres of woodland in Lincoln – a tiny town of 4,000 residents.

The home is entirely powered by solar and gives the full outdoorsy experience.

Despite being set in the heart of the North Maine Woods, the home is really just 10 minutes from Lincoln with abundant wildlife all around including moose, deer and even wild turkeys.

For those staying for the winter months, there’s easy access to snowmobile trails.

Built in 2017, the 1,500-square-foot home has modern amenities in a compact, thoughtfully designed space.

In Stacyville, a hamlet of fewer than 400 people, this log home is for sale at $340,000.

Built in 2003, the three-bedroom, one and a half-bathroom home is solar-powered and sits on 33 acres of land, ideal for growing trees or perhaps farming.

The remote location is not far from civilization with grocery stores just 15 minutes away.

The small towns of Millinocket, Houlton and Baxter State Park are just an hour’s drive away.

The home offers serene and secluded living and abundant recreational opportunities but with easy access to amenities.
