The 2024 Golden Globes have sparked outrage by taking aim at the Royal Family, with host Jo Koy raising eyebrows with his savage rant in Sunday’s ceremony
Host Jo Koy raised eyebrows with his savage rant in Sunday’s ceremony about the royal family.
The comedian took aim at King Charles in his opening monologue by branding the family ‘rich, white and dysfunctional,’ before quipping that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are paid ‘millions for doing absolutely nothing.’
Referencing Golden Globes favourite The Crown, Jo compared the series to the HBO drama Succession, telling the audience: ‘Succession has nine nominations. Just a great series about a rich, white, dysfunctional family, all scheming – oh, wait, that’s The Crown. I’m sorry.’
Jo went onto take aim at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and their oft-criticised Netflix docuseries.
The streaming service reportedly paid £88 million ($100million) for the couple’s 2022 docuseries as part of a multi-year deal with the streaming giant.
Referencing Harry and Meghan’s working habits, Jo quipped: ‘Harry and Meghan Markle got paid millions for doing absolutely nothing – and that’s just by Netflix.’

Lily Gladstone makes history
The star took home the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama, making her the first Indigenous actor to win an award in the ceremony’s 81-year history

In Martin Scorsese’s film, Gladstone portrayed Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman whose family members are tragically murdered in a plot to seize their fortune.
Gladstone, whose heritage includes Blackfeet and Nez Perce roots, is now just the second Native actress recognized by the Globes. The first was Irene Bedard, nominated in 1995 for the television movie Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee.
‘This is a historic one, and it doesn’t belong to just me,’ Gladstone said in English, after opening their acceptance speech speaking in the Blackfeet language.
‘I’m holding it with all of my beautiful sisters in the film and my mother [in the film], Tantoo Cardinal.’
The star then noted that, in the past, Hollywood would create fictional Native languages instead of portraying them accurately and authentically
‘I’m so grateful that I can speak even a little bit of my language because in this business, Native actors used to speak their lines in English and then the sound mixers would run them backwards to accomplish Native languages on camera,’ Gladstone explained.

After she paid him a compliment by saying she was a fan of his film The Bodyguard, and quoted an iconic scene, Kevin followed up by reciting her Barbie monologue.
‘You know, it’s literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough,’ he quoted her, adding, ‘That was pretty good.’
A stunned Ferrera replied: ‘Did you, Kevin Costner, memorize my monologue about womanhood from Barbie?’ she asked, to which he hilariously replied, ‘No.’
He went on: ‘But it’s an important message, really… and it always serves to remind me what’s possible in film.’
‘It just reminds me that when we take our time, when we manage to get it right, when film is working at its very best it can be about moments you never, ever forget… you just had one of those moments.’
