What an exhilerating afternoon in Montreal! Norris went into the pits for mediums, rejoining the track just behind Verstappen. The three-time world champ is four seconds clear of the Brit.

Charles Leclerc is crawling in P19 on the hard tyre. The rain is already coming down, however Ferrari have decided to roll the dice with the slicks.

Verstappen, Russell and and Piastri headed straight into the pits for fresh inters when the yellow flags were waved. Norris pitted a lap later, coming out in P3.

Lap 21 was a nightmare for Mercedes’ George Russell, who was overtaken by Norris and Verstappen in quick succession.

Norris is in the lead after taking P1 from Russell. Things are looking good for the 24-year-old, who is fresh off his maiden F1 victory in Miami just one month ago.

The two McLarens are the quickest cars on track, and Norris breezed past Verstappen with DRS.

Verstappen ran wide into turn 1, widening the gap to Russell, who has been leading the race since lap 1. The Mercedes driver now has a two second advantage.

And it’s a 5 second penalty for the RB driver. Disappointing news after he put in an excellent qualifying performance around this track to start P5.

The n is under investigation by the stewards for a false start. This could result in a time penalty for the driver who is currently in P7 after starting P5.

A slow pit stop for Magnussen
As expected, the Dane has pitted for intermediates. However, the team wasn’t ready for him and it was an 8.6 second pit stop. He’s now in P14.

Magnussen is several tenths of a second quicker than the rest of the field per sector. The sun appears to be coming out so the Haas driver is expeced to pit soon.

The rain is expected to ease soon
Mercedes say this is the ‘worst’ rain they’re expecting throughout the race.
Although the Haas drivers are currently on the optimal tyres, the wets won’t be very quick when the track begins to dry.

The drivers appear to be struggling for grip as Russell leads the first lap of the Grand Prix. While the rest of the grid struggles on inters, Haas’ Kevin Magnussen’s wet tyres are treating him well. He’s already up to P4!

Oscar Piastri says 'anything is possible'
The McLaren driver, who is starting on the second row of the grid, said ‘anything is possible’ in changeable conditions.
‘With weather like this, you never know,’ he told Sky Sports on the starting grid.

Jacques Villeneuve stands by his controversial Daniel Ricciardo comments
On the ESPN broadcast, former F1 driver Jacques Villeneuve said he stands by his critical comments about Daniel Ricciardo earlier this weekend.
‘Why’s he still in F1? Why?’ Villeneuve fumed on Sky Sports F1 on Friday.
‘We are hearing the same thing now for the last four or five years. “We have to make the car better for him.” Sorry, it’s been five years of that. No, you are in F1.’
On Sunday morning, Villeneuve conceeded that the Aussie race winner was ‘quick’ in qualifying, but emphazied ‘you’re only as good as your last few results.’

A weather update
Drivers headed out on exploratory laps, testing the inters and wet tyres to assess grip levels on the track.
It’s looking quite slippery out there with puddles scattered about and plenty of spray coming off the back of the cars.

One hour until lights out
The Canadian Grand Prix will begin in one hour, and rain is the talk of the paddock in Montreal.
Ben Nagle, who is preparing to head out to the starting grid, tells us the rain has currently eased off, but it’s likely to pick back up after the lights go out.
Expect plenty of drama on the track as tyre talk dominates the afternoon.
We’ve already seen some big shunts in the support races this morning, and a safety car looks likely at some point.

Both Sauber drivers, Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, will start from the pit lane today after they made changes to the rear wing specification overnight.

Russell reveals today's 'biggest challenge'
George Russell said he anticipates the ‘biggest challenge’ of the day will be ‘predicting the weather.’
The Mercedes driver told F1 TV he has his ‘eyes set on victory’ after clinching P1 from reigning world champion, Max Verstappen.
However, track conditions in Canada are looking extremely changeable.
His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, also predicted it will be ‘a tricky day today for everyone.’

How they'll line up this afternoon
In case you missed yesterday’s thrilling qualifying session, George Russell is set to start P1 alongside Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
It was a good day for McLaren, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri set to line up next to each other on the second row of the grid.
Both Ferraris failed to advance past Q2, with F1’s most recent race winner Charles Leclerc starting P11 and Carlos Sainz in P12.
Daniel Ricciardo also put in an excellent lap – 10 years after his maiden F1 victory at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He will start P5.
