Emergency services are fighting a fire after a chemical factory exploded leaving one man injured, it is believed.

Firefighters from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fire at the production area of the Synthite factory on on Denbigh Road, Mold, Flintshire at 2.06pm today.

In an update about the incident, the service said: ‘We were called at 14.06 to a fire at a factory on Denbigh Road, Mold and are in attendance tackling reports of a fire in the production area.

‘Local residents are being asked to close windows and doors and avoid the area due to smoke and as a precautionary measure.’

Police evacuated around 20 workers and contractors from the area.

One man is believed to be injured and has been taken to hospital, the BBC reported.

Mold town councillor Dr Megan Lloyd Hughes said: ‘Police, fire and emergency services remain on scene following multiple explosions and a subsequent fire at the Synthite plant. We are aware a critical emergency, whilst ongoing, has been stabilised.’

She later added: ‘I want to thank the incredible emergency services, whose actions today have no doubt saved lives.’

Earlier this afternoon, North Wales Police confirmed the closure of the A541 main road.

A spokesperson said: ‘Due to an ongoing incident at Synthite in Mold can all residents in the Mold area please keep their doors and windows closed. Note that the A541 is closed from the junction with Dreflan to the junction with Black Brook Road Rhyd y Goleu.’
