Historic fishing shacks that had stood the test of time – at least for 200 years – were no match for the ferocious winter weather unleashed by the latest winter storm to hit Maine on Saturday.

The weather system brought with it record flooding and high winds along the coast and saw iconic fishing shacks which had stood for centuries, washed away into the Atlantic as the highest tide of the season swept along the shoreline.

Fishing shacks at Fisherman’s Point in Portland stood no chance against the elements which showed no mercy as high tide simple swept them away into the sea around noon on Saturday.

The weather in Maine was part of a barrage of winter storms of one type or another that blanketed the U.S. on Saturday as a wave of chilly Arctic air threatened to break low-temperature records in the heartland.

Cold began to spread from coast to coast while a chill set over everything from football playoffs to presidential campaigns.

As the three-day Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend began, the weather forecast was mix of all-things winter.

Everything from an ice storm warning in Oregon to a blizzard warning in the northern Plains to high wind warnings in New Mexico.

Heavy rain is expected to sweep across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, accompanied freezing temperatures reaching as far south as the Texas and Florida panhandles.

Snow, ice and sub zero temperatures are set to span a huge swathe of the country from the Rockies to the south and east with an influx of fresh arctic air.

The Pacific Northwest has already experienced whiteout conditions and icy weather due to this weather system which is moved eastwards.
