He is the multi-millionaire pop star famous for his stripped-back show in an on-stage uniform of jeans and a T-shirt.

Now Scots singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi has warned of the pressure on his female colleagues to look good and put on an eye-catching performance.

He cited singers like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo whose live shows involve elaborate stage set-ups, choreographed dances and multiple costume changes.

The 28-year-old, from Whitburn, West Lothian, said women in the pop industry face more scrutiny than men who rarely receive criticism for their appearance or stage performances.

Speaking on the Creativo podcast, he said: ‘People like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo are really smashing it in pop and making the most interesting music I think.

‘Women seem to get up there and put everything into a performance and it’s all really thought out.

‘A lot of guys, myself included, get up there in a t-shirt and jeans and just sing.

‘I think there is more expected of women in the pop-sphere. A woman wouldn’t get away with getting up and singing a song in their t-shirt and jeans and sort of not caring.

‘For some reason, and it’s not fair obviously, there is a higher bar for female artists.

‘I feel like they get picked apart a bit more than male artists when it comes to stuff like that.’

Capaldi made his musical comeback on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury in June after taking two years off to focus on his mental health.

He said he may look at ramping up his live shows in the future but wants to concentrate on just playing gigs again for now.

He added: ‘I see it as complete and utter laziness on my part.

‘The only thing I like in music is getting up and singing. Music videos don’t excite me at all, photoshoots don’t excite me at all and with live performances I just like to sing the songs.

‘It is something I should pay more attention to and put more effort into. But I’m in this phase at the minute where I only want to do stuff that feels good.’
