Demi Moore’s gory new film The Substance is prompting cinema-goers to walk out after mere minutes as they say it’s the ‘most graphic film they’ve ever seen’.
The Substance aims to tackle the issue of impossible Hollywood beauty standards and sees Demi play the role of Elisabeth Sparkle.
Unceremoniously sacked as she hits her 50th birthday, Elisabeth discovers a black-market drug which can create a ‘younger, more beautiful, more perfect’ version of its user – but the drug’s strict conditions are gruesome.
So grisly, in fact, that cinema-goers have been walking out of screenings both in Britain and in the US due to the extreme levels of gore on display.
But while the film has been shocking viewers horror film lovers will be left too scared to even go to the cinema when this new film comes out.

The chilling trailer ends with what appears to be a glimpse of the vampire, completely concealed in a black cloak as Albin finally utters the name all have been waiting for.
‘We are here encountering the vampire,’ Albin utters as his hand sweeps over a cryptic symbol. ‘Nosferatu.’
A synopsis for Nosferatu reveals it is a ‘Gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.’
The rest of the cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney.
‘Yeah, it’s a scary film. It’s a horror movie. It’s a Gothic horror movie,’ the film’s director Robert Eggers told Empire. ‘And I do think that there hasn’t been an old-school Gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while.’
He continued: ‘And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case.’
The filmmaker, 40, raved that ‘Lily-Rose is absolutely phenomenal’ and this remake of the tale is ‘even more Ellen’s story than previous versions.’

This is the official movie poster for The Substance, which has been dividing critics
Social media comments have included calling the film ‘a raw, gory, grotesque, WILD depiction of the effects of ageism and the beauty standards set on women’
Eggers noted that Bill Skarsgard, who is responsible for Lily-Rose’s terrified expression, was completely ‘transformed’ in his role.
‘I’m fearful that he might not get the credit that he deserves because he’s just… he’s not there,’ Eggers teased. ‘He felt like honouring who had come before him. It’s all very subtle.’
He continued: ‘But I think the main thing is that he’s even more a folk vampire. In my opinion he looks like a dead Transylvanian nobleman, and in a way that we’ve never actually seen what an actual dead Transylvanian nobleman would look like and be dressed like.’
Nosferatu will be released on December 25, 2024.
