Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III has become embroiled in a controversial race debate after being told his children ‘aren’t black’ because of their white mother.

Griffin III inadvertently went viral on social media this week after responding to a tweet asking him which black women he supported, with a picture of his four daughters.

Quickly, the post racked up 10 million views, with ‘black women’ flooding the comments to tell him that his children aren’t black, due to their white Estonian-American mother Grete.

‘The number one thing being said was, “you can’t say that, sir, because you married a white girl”… as if marrying someone outside your race means you can’t drop facts,’ Griffin explained in the viral post.

‘Is marrying someone outside your race a bad thing? No, it’s not a bad thing. Love knows no colors, and that’s what we should be preaching, instead of divisiveness.’

Alongside the post, he wrote: ‘Black women telling my four daughters that they aren’t black is BEYOND WRONG.’

He then followed it up with a longer comment on Instagram, which read: ‘Often times some people say that I don’t support Black Women because my wife is white.

‘Not only is that false, it’s ignorant. I support Black Women starting with ALL 4 OF MY DAUGHTERS pictured below. I support my Black Mom, 2 Older Black sisters, cousins, aunties, grandmas and all Black Women.

‘I also support all women starting with my INCREDIBLE Estonian immigrant wife who is an AMAZING mother also pictured below.

‘Support is not a piece of pie. We should support everyone and not divisiveness.’

On her own social media account, Griffin’s wife Grete also weighed in, writing: ‘Since when are biracial children not considered black? So Halle Berry is not black?

‘Barack Obama is not black? I am proud of all four of my black daughters and for y’all to try and say my kids are not black is WILD.’

In his latest Twitter post, that has now been viewed 2 million times, Griffin goes on to express his anger at the comments about his daughters.

‘It really is unbelievable that I put out a statement saying that black men support black women, yet we’ve got black women in the comments not even supporting black women,’ he added.

‘I know that these girls have not reached womanhood yet, but that makes it even worse because now you’ve got black women hating on little black girls, trying to tell them what they are and what they aren’t.

‘I don’t believe that you can meet hate with hate and then try to find love. Instead of meeting this hate that was seen online about my daughters being called black, I decided to just drop more facts.’

He then states the ‘one drop rule’, that states ‘if you have any ounce of black blood, you are considered African-American, or black, in this country.’

‘I know that our four daughters are biracial, they will know their Estonian heritage, they will know every facet of both sides of their family, they will know who they are,’ he continued.

The response in the comments to the X post were overwhelmingly positive as Griffin’s fans rallied behind him and his family.

‘This was such a great message to ALL. God bless your beautiful family, Tiffany Gomas said.

Another added: ‘Funny, they’ll say your daughters aren’t black because of their white mom but have no problem calling Kamala a black in woman despite having an Indian mom. Make it make sense.’
