While out on the promotional push for her latest role in the action-adventure film The Fall Guy alongside Ryan Gosling, the topic of children of celebrities popped into the conversation with Emily Blunt.
More specifically, their reaction to seeing their parents onscreen as they take on the identity and persona of someone else for the production.
‘They don’t love watching me on screen,’ the actress, 41, revealed of her daughters Hazel, nine, and Violet, seven, during a conversation with People, before sharing how she understands ‘because I’m their mommy and it’s very strange to see me play someone else.’
It appears their less-than-thrilled reaction to seeing their mother onscreen is universal no matter the genre of film, which includes her roles in such Disney productions as The Muppets (2011), Mary Poppins Returns (2018) and Jungle Cruise (2021).
In fact, the fantasy adventure co-starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson seemed to traumatize her girls a little more than the rest due to dramatic close-quartered scenes shot underwater with their mum.
Emily Blunt, 41, revealed her two daughters get scared and even cry when they seen her onscreen ‘trapped or in some kind of peril’
Blunt says her role in the fantasy adventure Jungle Cruise co-starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson seemed to traumatize her girls a little more than the rest due to dramatic close-quartered scenes shot underwater with their mum
Due to the intensity of the dramatic scenes, Blunt’s girls, who she shares with husband John John Krasinski, ‘have only seen Jungle Cruise once.’
‘They didn’t like the underwater stuff where I’m trapped and I’m in peril,’ the Oscar-nominated actress said of Jungle Cruise.
In the film, which is based on the Disney theme park ride of the same name, Blunt plays Dr. Lily Houghton, an eccentric, adventurous and virtuous botanist working in a male-dominated field, who professes she doesn’t know how to swim.
Considering the setting of the story is on the Amazon River, it makes from some high-drama for Blunt’s character, which doesn’t go over very well with Hazel and Violet.
Upon seeing their mother onscreen in dangerous underwater situations, the girls’ ‘started crying’ and then they picked themselves up and ‘left the room.’
Gosling, Blunt’s co-star in The Fall Guy, chimed in on the conversation and agreed with her daughters’ reaction. ‘I didn’t like that, either,’ he joked with Blunt. ‘That was upsetting for me to watch you like that.’
The Hollywood leading man confessed he talks over any potential roles he’s thinking of playing with his daughters Esmeralda, nine, and Amada, eight, along with their mother Eva Mendes.
In fact, he even admitted the girls have veto power if they aren’t comfortable with a role he’s considering.

‘My kids didn’t want me to be set on fire,’ he said of their reaction to a scene in The Fall Guy, which the star also serves as a producer. ‘They were like, “No. No fire.” So I didn’t do it.’
In comparison to Blunt’s girls, Gosling says his kids ‘don’t care’ about the fact that he and Mendes, 50, appear on screen at all.
To make his point, the Barbie star recalled a time when their kids asked to ‘fast-forward’ through one of Mendes’ roles — despite the actress starring in one of their favorite shows.
‘Eva was on an episode of Bluey,’ recalls Gosling. ‘We both thought it was going to be huge,’ but instead, ‘They were like, “Fast-forward through that part!”‘

Agreeing with her theory, Gosling added, ‘They’re not into it.’
The former Disney star also came clean about being frightened, himself, while shooting The Fall Guy, so much so that he wore sunglasses during his scariest stunt, where his character falls backwards on wires, in order to hide the fear in his eyes.
The Fall Guy, directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce, premiered at SXSW on March 12, and is now in theaters all across the world as of May 3.
