Vice President Kamala Harris’ political team fundraised more than $300 million in August – more than double the amount gathered by the former president Donald Trump.
Senior officials directing Trump’s election campaign had been brimming with confidence when incumbent Joe Biden announced his withdrawal as the Democratic nominee last month.
But the money has suddenly shifted in favor of the Harris campaign who claim they have raised more than $540 million since she entered the race on July 21. A massive sum that eclipses fundraising by Republicans.
The numbers were confirmed by two campaign officials to NBC News.
The Harris campaign was given a major boost in momentum in August after Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was chosen as the Vice Presidential nominee alongside the Democrats successful four-day convention in Chicago.
The huge cash injection for Harris came after the Trump campaign reported it had raised $130 million in August. The campaign says is is in a good position with almost $300 million of cash on hand.
The massive cash haul adds to the war chest Harris inherited upon Biden’s exit.
Some state Democratic parties have also said they have seen an uptick in donations after Biden stepped aside and made the endorsement for Harris.
The shake-up essentially reenergized Democrats who were far from enthusiastic about a rematch between Biden and Trump. Harris being at the top of the ticket has also galvanized black women, a critical voting bloc for Democrats.
Meanwhile, the Trump campaign noted how 98 percent of August’s donations were of amounts less than $200, with an average donation of $56.
Trump has proven to be a prolific fundraiser, but the newness of Harris’ bid has prompted a boost in cash from Democratic donors.
‘These fundraising numbers from August are a reflection of that movement and will propel President Trump’s America First movement back to the White House so we can undo the terrible failures of Harris and Biden,’ Trump campaign senior adviser Brian Hughes said.
‘With Republicans united and a growing number of Independents and disaffected Democrats crossing partisan lines, the Trump-Vance campaign has momentum for the final stretch of the race.’
The next campaign finance disclosure deadline for Harris’ campaign comes later this month on September 20.
Nevertheless, the money for Harris appears likely to continue to flood in with plans to hold a number of fundraisers for Harris during September, with events possible in New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
On Tuesday, Harris’ campaign said it was sending nearly $25 million in an effort to boost Democrats’ efforts in down-ballot races, a figure the campaign said was the largest ever in a presidential cycle.
Trump’s campaign committee raised $268.5 million in total between January 2023 and July 31, 2024, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
But Harris’ candidacy even drew enough enthusiasm from donors to erase the cash advantage that Trump had at the end of June against Biden.
Looking at the time period up to end of July, Trump was seen to be at a financial advantage.
The top 10 Super PACs supporting Trump raised $305.6 million since the beginning of 2024 while the top 10 supporting Harris, once Biden, raised $199.2 million in that same time period.
Trump is also investing more advertising dollars in Pennsylvania than any other state from now through November 5 – highlighting the importance of that state in blocking Harris from earning the 270 electoral votes needed for victory.
Trump advisers say the GOP nominee is in good position for the remaining two months of the general election campaign.
