The deaths of a man and woman who fell from a major overpass in Sydney’s CBD are officially being treated as a tragic double suicide.
The couple, believed to be in their 40s, fell from the Western Distributor overpass onto the Harbour Street offramp below on Saturday morning.
The pair died before emergency responders arrived, despite the frantic efforts of bystanders who performed CPR.
The tragedy sparked speculation online that the deaths were either accidental or a sinister murder.
‘Far more likely it was an accident, maybe they were sitting on or leaning over the railing to take photos or something,’ a user posted on Reddit, while one speculated it may have been murder-suicide.
Another suggested it could have been ‘a relationship violence situation’, but one user admitted: ‘It leaves more questions than answers.’
It’s still not clear how the couple came to be on the overpass and their identity has not yet been officially revealed.
But investigators have since established that there were no suspicious circumstances after reviewing extensive CCTV and mobile footage.
A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
The development comes as shocked witnesses took to social media to describe the tragedy.
One man claimed he saw the woman take her jumper off moments before the pair fell, while another witness was sitting in traffic at the time.
‘As I got closer I saw the bodies, face down,’ the driver wrote online.
‘Good people ran to help, but nothing could be done.’
A third witness added: ‘I wish it didn’t happen and that I didn’t see it.’
The tragedy brought traffic to a standstill across the CBD and forced the closure of two southbound lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge for almost three hours.
Harbour Street was also closed for several hours.
