Demi Moore, Adrien Brody and Zoe Saldana were among the main winners at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards on Friday night.

Surprisingly, even for director Sean Baker, his independent film Anora beat out massive blockbusters like Wicked, The Substance, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, and more for the biggest honour of the evening, Best Picture.

While Wicked was shot on a reported $145million budget and Dune: Part Two on a reported $190million, Anora was made on just a fraction of it’s most costly competitors at just $6million.

But away from the prizes, there were some awkward moments on stage, hilarious wardrobe mishaps, reunions and badly-timed bathroom breaks which got fans talking.

The ceremony, which was hosted by Chelsea Handler, finally took place at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, after it was pushed back to February due to the Los Angeles wildfires.

As with any live show packed with A-list stars, there were some Hollywood surprises during the Critics Choice Awards and have listed the biggest viral moments of the night.

Kathy Bates was clearly not expecting to win a Critics’ Choice Award on Sunday night, as her reaction clearly shows.

When she was announced as she winner of Best Actress in a Drama Series for Matlock, she was left momentarily speechless – before dropping a few expletives.

As Kathy sat in a state of disbelief at her table, she could be seen saying the F-word twice before she proceeded to get onto the stage.

Kathy managed to avoid repeating the expletive during her heart-felt speech as she composed herself.

‘Wow I really didn’t think this was going to happen,’ she began before giving numerous shout-outs, including to co-stars Beau Bridges, Skye P. Marhsall, and Jason Ritter.

‘You know, when we come to work everyday, there’s so much love on that set, and so many hundreds of years of experience, rolling the dolly, working the camera, the costumers, the prop people, they’re just the top of the line, and walking onto that set, it feels like a miracle, and I’m so grateful to all of them.’

In her speech, she also thanked the firefighters who fought the devastating LA fires which destroyed many Hollywood stars’ homes last month.

Kathy also offered her trophy to producer Eric Christian Olsen, who she said was still looking for a permanent home after losing his residence in the recent fires.

‘I really have to thank the firefighters. You know, our producer, Eric Christian Olsen, had a house in the Palisades and it burned down, and so it’s very personal to us, she shared.

‘To watch all the film of you guys standing in a line with a just a wall of flames in front of you is just terrifying and I don’t know how you did it. But I thank you so much for so many of us in Los Angeles.’

‘I also want to tell Eric Olsen who hasn’t quite found a home yet – this is coming to you first thing for decor,’ she added.

Nicole Kidman and her Moulin Rouge co-star Ewan McGregor also enjoyed a sweet reunion during the awards.

The Oscar-winner, 57, and the Scottish actor, 53, were pictured catching up at the show, 24 years after the beloved musical romance drama was released.

The duo sat side-by-side at the show wearing similar looks, with Nicole rocking a grey Saint Laurent blazer and pants, and Ewan sporting a black suit.

Nicole was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a drama series for her role in Paramount+ show Lioness, but lost out to Shõgun star Moeka Hoshi.

Meanwhile, Ewan was on hand to present the award for Best Actress, which went to Demi Moore for her role in The Substance.

The pair’s reunion prompted an outpouring of fan reactions, with many sharing they were ‘crying’ after seeing them together again.

They gushed: ‘NICOLE KIDMAN AND EWAN MCGREGOR SITTING TOGETHER IM CRYING’; ‘Ewan and nicole sitting next to each other my heart is full’;

‘Aww, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. It’s been too long!’; ‘It makes me so happy that Ewan and Nicole are sitting together’;

‘Seeing Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman in one frame was not on my 2025 bingo card’;

‘Made me want to rewatch the film! One of my favorite musicals’; ‘Omg love them so bad.’

The 2001 Baz Luhrmann film follows a tragic love affair between Christian (McGregor), a young writer, and Satine (Kidman), a courtesan and star of the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris.

Orlando Bloom and Colin Farrell suffered a fashion faux pas as they wore the same burgundy suit while attending the event.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean actor and The Batman star both arrived on the red carpet wearing a maroon two-piece layered over a matching shirt.

Orlando, 48, paired his look with a pair of black shiny leather Chelsea boots and opened the top three buttons of his shirt.

Meanwhile, Colin, also 48, opted for a suede loafer for his ensemble which he paired with a maroon woven belt.

He opted to keep all his buttons closed but due to the shirt’s very low-cut neckline, the shirt looked almost identical to Orlando’s.

Colin won Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television for his performance in The Penguin.

He was made unrecognizable by heavy layers of prosthetics to allow him to play the Batman villain, whose name was shortened to Oz Cobb for the series.

Ralph Fiennes drove fans wild after he took part in a Babygirl skit with the host of the night, Chelsea Handler.

Chelsea, 49, did a bit alluding to a scene from the erotic thriller, which stars Nicole Kidman as a CEO embarking on an affair with her intern, played by Harris Dickinson.

The scene in question sees Nicole’s CEO character served a glass of milk that was ordered for her by her much-younger lover. He later whispers to her, ‘good girl’.

‘Babygirl was one of my favorite movies this year because I love everything Nicole Kidman does,’ Chelsea said, kicking off the skit.

‘And it even inspired me to hire a new, sexy intern! Oh, this must be from him!’ she added as she was presented with a glass of milk.

Ralph, 62, who was seated right next to Chelsea during the bit, gazed up at the actress as she drank the milk before she noticed he was watching her.

‘Good girl,’ Ralph said after she paused. ‘Good girl. Good girl. Keep going, don’t stop! Go on! Go on!’

In a flustered tone, Chelsea then transitioned to the next award.

‘Anyway, here to present the award for best animated feature,’ she said before handing off to Craig Robinson.

While overcome with emotion on stage, the 46-year-old quipped that her significant other, Marco Perego-Saldaña, had timed his trip to the bathroom rather poorly

Zoe Saldaña was emotional as she accepted her award for Best Supporting Actress on Friday night – before humorously pointing out her husband was in the bathroom.

While overcome with emotion on stage, the 46-year-old quipped that her significant other, Marco Perego-Saldaña, had timed his trip to the bathroom rather poorly.

‘My husband’s back in the bathroom,’ she said after being handed the Critics Choice Award for her role in the controversial film Emilia Pérez.

‘He literally went to the bathroom,’ she laughed.

Her win for the Netflix film comes after the discovery of racist and Islamophobic tweets from Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón threatened to derail the film’s award hopes.

She was in tears as she delivered a moving speech, despite her significant other being in the bathroom right before her category was announced. She called winning the award an ‘incredible honor.’

‘To my fellow nominees, the films this year and the work you’ve all done. It’s breathtaking,’ she said. ‘I will forever be proud to be among you. Thank you to all of you. I can’t see you, but you f***ing rock,’ she continued.

She shared thanks for French director Jacques Audiard and the ‘cast and crew’ generally, without stating Gascón’s name.

Zoe jokingly referenced criticism she has received in the past, including that she is in ‘too many franchises,’ and that the Avatar and Guardians Of The Galaxy star is ‘too blue.’

‘Whenever you receive a negative criticism for a role or a film, everyone says, don’t read the reviews,’ she continued. ‘Then when you get the positive feedback, everyone says, did you read the reviews?’

‘I do sometimes. I sometimes read the reviews and I internalize it, especially the really insightful and helpful feedback, like, “Her crying is really distracting. She’s in too many franchises,” or my personal favorite, “She’s too blue.” So I will listen to you all tonight, and I will accept this with pride. Thank you.’

‘To think that Emilia Pérez has been the little movie that could and has resonated with so many people has been an experience worth having,’ Saldaña continued.

She went on to thank the people closest to her.

‘Thank you to my family, especially my incredible husband and my nephew, who is with me tonight. You made me, me. So thank you, and to my boys, my greatest adventure and my toughest critics. I love you.

‘My wish for the impact of this film on audiences in our world is that I hope we can all be curious and open hearted towards each other, because you never know when you’ll have the opportunity to be a hero, and someone else’s story.

‘So, our world is too big and too beautiful to be any other way so stay curious, stay kind and stay blue, not too blue,’ she concluded the speech.
