Sen. Cory Booker’s longtime staffer was arrested at the Capitol on Monday for carrying a gun.
The Democratic hill worker, Kevin Batts, 59, is a special assistant to the New Jersey senator and retired law enforcement officer.
U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement on Tuesday their arrest of Batts the day prior was for carrying a firearm without a license.
‘All weapons are prohibited from Capitol Grounds, even if you are a retired law enforcement officer, or have a permit to carry in another state or the District of Columbia,’ USCP said in a statement.
According to NOTUS, the arrest took place around 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Batts was handcuffed and put into a USCP car outside the Capitol.
The arrest was made just minutes before Booker took the floor of the Senate to begin a marathon overnight speech, which is still ongoing.

Booker vowed to keep speaking long as he possibly could and was still going more than 16 hours later as his colleagues returned to Capitol Hill on Tuesday morning and got back to work.
The all-nighter – though not technically a filibuster – was a way to get unlimited time to speak out against President Donald Trump and billionaire ‘first buddy’ Elon Musk.
A filibuster is a Senate practice meant to delay and block a particular vote.

This only appears to be an act of protest of the current administration’s policies – specifically in cutting the federal government workforce.
MAGA loyalists decried the overnight symbolic speech as a waste of time as it serves as a performative delay.
The incident involving his staffer happened minutes before he took the floor – but Booker still chugged forward with the stunt.
USCP detailed the incident that led to his arrest in a statement obtained by DailyMail.com.
‘Yesterday afternoon a Member of Congress led an IDed staff member around security screening at the Hart Senate Office Building,’ the statement recalls the chain of events. ‘Later that evening, outside the Senate Galleries, the IDed staff member — who is a retired law enforcement officer — told our officers he was armed.’
‘The staff member, 59-year-old Kevin A. Batts of New Jersey, was arrested for Carrying a Pistol Without a License.’
Batts has been on Booker’s staff since 2006.
